Arlene Lanier is October’s Counselor of the Month
Online PR News – 28-October-2009 – – CollegeInvest, in partnership with the Colorado Council on High School/College Relations, is proud to honor Arlene Lanier of Rangeview High School as October’s Counselor of the Month.
Lanier was nominated by her colleague Ann Atencio. Atencio speaks of Lanier’s ability to inspire not only her students but other adults to see past stereotypes which often hold people back.
“I first met Arlene five years ago at an Aurora Public Schools (APS) Equity and Diversity training. We were both being trained as facilitators in our district through the Anti-Defamation League. Arlene already had a reputation around our district as a leader and a trainer for equity issues… In fact, because of the work of Arlene and a few other individuals, on April 28th, Rangeview High School was recognized as a No Place for Hate School by ADL, becoming the first APS School to earn this title,” writes Atencio.
Atencio goes on to talk about how Lanier organizes the PSAT test, starts clubs that are needed, sits on a district committee, and recruits students for pre-collegiate programs. In fact, according to Atencio, because of Lanier’s efforts, Rangeview High School has the largest number of students in their district taking college courses. This is all part of Lanier being an advocate for her students.
The Counselor of the Month program is designed to give counselors the recognition they deserve. Counselors spend countless hours helping their students plan for college and keeping them academically on track. Each month starting in September and running through May, a counselor is selected for this award. Students, parents and colleagues can nominate a counselor at anytime throughout the school year.
“High school counselors are unsung heroes, encouraging students to dream and accomplish their goals,” said Misti Ruthven of CollegeInvest. “Counselors often go unrecognized as champions for students to go on to bigger and better things and follow their dreams.”
