Online PR News – 21-October-2009 – – The Tulsa Golden Hurricane travel down to Texas to take on the UTEP Miners in a Conference USA match-up to headline college football this Wednesday night. Outside of a shutout to Oklahoma, Tulsa has played pretty well this season with a 4-2 record on the year. The Golden Hurricane gave No. 5 Boise State all they could handle last week before falling short 28-21. Tulsa’s offense strived in conference play last year and they will be a force again Wednesday as the Golden Hurricane will be 7 ½ point favorites at kickoff.
UTEP has not had the type of year they wished with a disappointing 2-4 mark. The problem remains on the defensive side of the ball where they have allowed over 35 points per game for the 2nd straight year among the worse in college football. The Miners offense has plenty of capability to score points and they gave Houston a scare just a few weeks ago. The Miners will be underdogs for the contest, but the offense looks to help rally the team to a big home victory.
UTEP running back Donald Buckram is the biggest asset to the Miners offense. Buckram has been able to post 618 yards through the first 6 games and will be a big factor this Wednesday night. Buckram has actually gotten fewer carries than most of the starters around the conference, but has made up for it with 6.4 yards per carry to lead the conference. Tulsa has allowed 193 yards on two different occasions against opposing offenses that have ranked in the top 50 in rushing this year and it is safe to say they can be exploited up the middle. The Miners do not maintain the most elusive running game, but Buckram will have the chance to make plays.
Miners QB Trevor Vittatoe has not been exactly impressive behind center this season. In fact, Vittatoe has thrown 6 picks just in the last 3 games and the UTEP offense has just produced 293 yards of total offense all year. Even worse on defense the team ranks towards the very bottom of college football allowing a crazy 493 yards of total offense. The Miners ranked 112th last year in scoring defense allowing 38 points per game and they are already allowing 35 per game in just 6 games this season. Despite the poor numbers, UTEP is expected to play well this Wednesday night and frustrate the Tulsa defense with their running game and perhaps they can have a chance to win if they can make some big plays.
Tulsa is 2-0 in the conference this season and they have a very good quarterback in G.J Kinne. The sophomore quarterback is holding onto a 62% completion percentage on the year and has thrown 12 touchdowns to just 2 picks for the year. Kinne has racked up 1,296 yards in his first season as starter and he delivers accurate passes. WR Damaris Johnson will be the recipient of some of those throws. Johnson is the big play guy who has caught 24 passes this season with a solid 18 yards per catch average.
Fellow wide out Slick Shelley will also get some chances to make some plays as he is responsible for 20 yards per catch and the Golden Hurricane passing offense a pretty solid bunch. UTEP has been flat horrible against the pass and in defense in general. Expect Kinne to exploit this weak defense and put up some solid numbers throughout the night. If Tulsa gets a good effort from their rush defense, this could get ugly.
BTB's college football picks of the week is take Tulsa -7.5 points to the bank!
