Online PR News – 13-October-2009 – – Santa Barbara, CA – October 13, 2009 – The Gwendolyn Strong Foundation (GSF), a nonprofit organization striving to raise awareness of and research funding for Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), the #1 genetic killer of young children, recently launched ShopToEndSMA.com as a simple way for anyone to help raise funding for its cause without ever pulling a cent out of their own pockets. Through ShopToEndSMA, a partnership between GSF and We-Care.com, anyone can do their normal online shopping, through hundreds of major online retailers, knowing that a portion of their online purchase will be donated to GSF to help cure SMA.
SMA is a terminal, degenerative disease that impacts the voluntary muscles in infants and children including the ability to walk, sit, stand, eat, breathe, and even swallow. 90% of children born with SMA die before the age of two (2). Although SMA is not a household name, the gene responsible for SMA is unknowingly carried by 1 in 40 people or nearly 10 Million Americans. There is currently no treatment or cure, but SMA research is extremely mature and researchers have stressed that one is attainable in the next five (5) years if provided the appropriate resources. GSF is focused on helping the vibrant SMA community make sure those resources are not an obstacle to finding that cure.
"ShopToEndSMA.com and our partnership with We-Care.com is an example of how GSF is focused on harnessing the power of the Internet and social media to do our part in helping cure SMA once and for all,” said Bill Strong, GSF co-founder. “The cure for SMA is truly within reach and each and every collective penny makes a difference in the timeline of these groundbreaking SMA focused research programs”.
It’s simple to use ShopToEndSMA. Shoppers can go directly through the ShopToEndSMA.com shopping portal when they are ready to make an online purchase or they can download the We-Care.com Reminder through ShopToEndSMA.com to make giving to GSF an automatic part of their everyday online shopping experience.
GSF launched its ShopToEndSMA program in September 2009 and We-Care.com selected it as their October “Cause of the Month”.
“It's rare to find an organization as committed to changing people's lives as GSF," said Bill Snyder, We-Care.com's general manager. "GSF is fiercely determined to find a cure for this awful disease, and their commitment and dedication through creative programs such as ShopToEndSMA.com are inspiring to all of us at We-Care.com.”
“We are honored and thrilled that We-Care.com has selected ShopToEndSMA.com as their ‘Cause of the Month’. This will no doubt help us further our mission of raising awareness of SMA and funding towards that attainable cure”, said Mr. Strong.
