While English is the official language of much of Canada, it is not the only language spoken in the country.
Online PR News – 08-February-2017 – Vancouver, BC – While English is the official language of much of Canada, it is not the only language spoken in the country. According to The Berlitz Group, several other languages are popular in major cities, including Vancouver. French is the second most spoken language in the country, partially because it is the main language in Quebec. In addition, other languages spoken in Vancouver include Punjabi, Cantonese, Chinese and Mandarin.
Mandarin and Chinese are two of the most spoken languages in the world, and immigrants have brought these languages to Canada, especially in the major cities. While English and France are the mother tongues for the country, other languages, such as German, Italian and Spanish are also spoken here. According to the study, 40 percent of the population in Vancouver speak Mandarin, Cantonese or another Chinese language. In addition, approximately 18 percent speak Punjabi. The statistics show that almost one million people in the city have a native language other than English or French, which increases the need for more interpreters.
The results from the study show the need for people to learn a language other than their own even if they have no plans to travel outside their country. A representative of The Berlitz Group, a language school in Vancouver, states, “Many people think they only need to learn a new language if they plan to travel internationally, but this study shows otherwise.” They go on to explain that more businesses will be hiring people who are multilingual in an effort to provide better customer service to their customers whose native language is not English or French. This is the case for many industries, but especially in health care where being able to communicate with people may be a matter of life and death.
For those who are looking to learn a language to enhance their careers, The Berlitz Group recommends looking at which secondary languages are most spoken in the local community. In the past, people learned a language based on their personal interests or the one easiest to study. Now, it becomes a matter of which language is most relevant to the geographical region and the industry where they work. People may be intimidated at the thought of learning a complex language like Mandarin, but The Berlitz Group assures students that they can learn any language with study and practice. In fact, it is easier to master a language and become fluent when the person can practice it in real life. Learning a language such as Chinese becomes a simpler process when the student can find local people to communicate with.
The Berlitz Group recommends finding a reputable language program that offers classes to fit the person’s schedule and learning style. It may be group lessons, private lessons or online courses that work best. The person should not expect to become fluent in just a few lessons, but they will learn faster if they can speak it in everyday situations. As the immigrant population grows in large cities, this doesn’t appear to be a problem.
