Toyota and Tesla are teaming up on the Electric RAV4, to arrive in Performance Toyota showrooms in 2012.
Online PR News – 23-November-2010 – – Performance Toyota is excited about the collaboration of Toyota and Tesla to create the all-new electric Toyota RAV4-EV, expected to hit Nebraska showrooms in 2012.
The all-electric Toyota RAV4-EV will combine the Toyota RAV4 model with a Tesla electric powertrain to give drivers maximum performance and versatility. It will offer the versatility of an SUV with zero emissions and should have a range and acceleration that will exceed other electric vehicles in its class.
A prototype of the Toyota RAV4-EV has already been created by Tesla and is currently being tested by Toyota. However, this prototype has been under tight security and few details have been released. The RAV4-EV is expected to be unveiled at the Los Angeles auto show next month and a fleet of these vehicles will be ready for evaluation and performance testing by the end of this year.
A first all-electric Toyota RAV4 was developed in 1997 and sold until 2003. It appeared the market wasn’t ready for an all-electric vehicle, though, and it was discontinued in 2003 after only 300 sold. That model reached up to 78 miles-per-hour and had a range of 100 miles. The new Toyota RAV4-EV is expected to perform at higher speeds and have an even greater range.
Toyota and Tesla have not set a starting cost for the Toyota RAV4-EV, but it is expected to be lower than other all-electric vehicles from Tesla. Tesla hopes to drive down the cost of electric vehicles so they are within reach of mainstream buyers.
