BOCA RATON, FL (November 5, 2010) - To celebrate nature's most precious resource and inspire students to discover the wonder of water using art, science and their own creativity more than 50 Florida schools, from Tavernier to Ft. Pierce and including Sarasota and Bradenton, registered to take part in the "Water is Life - Classroom Mural Contest," an environmental mural painting contest with renowned environmental artist Wyland. Winning entries created by students in grades 5th to 8th from schools in Parkland and Coral Springs in Broward County, and Boca Raton, Boynton Beach and Delray Beach in Palm Beach County were announced today. According to the Wyland Foundation, the top three winning entries will be on display at the Boca Raton Museum of Art during this weekend’s Wyland Living Green Fair (www.livinggreenfair.com) in Mizner Park that is hosted by the City of Boca Raton from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day that offers an interactive community experience that brings together art, community involvement, and awareness about the environment to share how individuals and families can do better for the Earth and live a higher quality of lifestyle.

1st Place: Westglades Middle School, Parkland-8th Grade Art-24 students: Teacher-Debbie Golding

2nd Place: Boca Raton Community Middle School, Boca Raton-7th/8th Grade-30 students: Teacher Linda Fronckowiak

3rd Place: Coral Springs Charter School, Coral Springs -6th-8th Grades/School Art Club-30 students: Teacher Lindsay Dunham

Honorable Mention: Christa McAuliffe Middle School, Boynton Beach -6th and 8th Grade Art-17 students : Teacher Linda Morgan

Non-qualified entry winner: SD Spady Elementary, Delray Beach -1st and 2nd Grade Art-18 students; Teachers Ruth Santiago and Linda Kunesh

All students who participated in the mural contest and their schools are invited to view the murals at the family-friendly free Wyland Living Green Fair where all generations will be engaged through an array of entertaining interactive experiences that include Wyland painting 50-foot murals with South Florida children (a new one each day); product showcases; unique exhibitions; stage performances; organic cooking demos by South Florida chefs and food tastings; displays of eco-friendly hybrid cars; previews of fashions; a Kids Eco-zone; the Wyland Clean Water Mobile Learning Center complete with a 40-person theater, a running river, video microscopes, a watershed exhibit with actual rainfall; Wyland’s Water’s Extreme Journey Maze; movies; live entertainment; concert performances by Disney Channel and Radio Disney teen stars, and a host of other activities. A portion of the event proceeds will benefit the Wyland Foundation.

The first 50 teachers who registered for the mural contest received a free mural canvas kit including a mural canvas donated by Fredrix Artist Canvas, and paints, and brushes (one per school) for their students to create a 5' by 10' mural celebrating water conservation, along with an inspirational DVD and teacher's guide. For classes not receiving a free canvas, murals were painted on an alternate 5' x 10' white surface of their choice (like a school or church wall) or additional mural canvases could be ordered through Dick Blick Art Materials (www.dickblick.com ). A video web link hosted by Wyland with how-to-paint footage tips was emailed to each participating teacher.
