Marcy Twardak, a 25-year breast cancer survivor, has been named a Komen Chicago Hero and will appear in a new breast cancer awareness PSA.
Online PR News – 18-October-2016 – Chicago, IL – Corboy & Demetrio CFO Marcy Twardak, a 25-year breast cancer survivor, will be recognized as a Susan G. Komen Chicagoland Hero at Komen's 'Ignite the Night' Gala on October 22, 2016 at Wintrust Bank in Chicago.
In 1991, when Marcy was 34 years old and had three children under the age of seven, she was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer. Twenty five years later, Marcy is an accomplished legal executive who devotes her free time to helping non-profit organizations achieve their goals and sits on a number of Boards. Marcy's 'Hero' story will be told in Komen Chicago's new public service announcement video, which will debut at the Gala. Marcy's daughter, Katie Twardak, now 32, also appears in the PSA.
"I want women and their children everywhere to know that there is life after breast cancer. Quality care and early detection saved my life. I am living proof," Marcy Twardak said. Komen Chicago hopes the inaugural gala will bring to light treatment and survivorship disparities of breast cancer in minority communities in Chicago. According to Komen Chicago statistics, breast cancer mortality rates are 40 percent higher for African-American women compared to white women.
Also, African-American women and Latinas are more likely to be diagnosed with late-stage breast cancer. Eradicating these disparities is also important to Marcy Twardak. "I enthusiastically support all of the work that Komen Chicago does to save more lives, and especially its new campaign to help bridge the gap so that WHERE you live shouldn't determine IF you live," she said.
The mission of Susan G. Komen, Chicagoland Area, is to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering others, ensuring quality care for all, and energizing science to find the cures. Gala ticket prices start at $180, the cost of one mammogram, for young professionals. The Gala will be held at Wintrust Bank, 231 S. LaSalle St., Chicago, and tickets may be purchased online at www.komenchicago.org/gala" target="_blank" class="highlight_link" rel="nofollow">http://www.komenchicago.org/gala>.
