Award-winning publisher, Sagaponack Books, releases their highly acclaimed nature guide, Pelican Pete’s Backyard Adventures. The new series is checked for accuracy by experts and designed to help kids connect with nature.
Online PR News – 24-September-2009 – – St. Augustine, FL (September 24, 2009)—While the latest e-generation is obsessed with “tweeting twords on twitter” (and yes, that really is what they call it), Florida’s own modern-day Mother Goose, Frances Keiser, and her co-creator husband, Hugh, are offering a few alternatives.
Their new book, titled Pelican Pete’s Backyard Adventures (ISBN 978-0-0966884562), delivers a collection of bite-sized nature facts that are easy to digest and no-materials-needed activities guaranteed to get you exploring outdoors.
After learning much about the ill effects of nature-deficit disorder, the couple decided to publish a series of newspaper columns that started in The St. Augustine Record almost three years ago. “We were stunned to learn that children can recognize over 1,000 corporate logos, but are unable to name ten plants and animals in their own backyard,” says author Frances Keiser.
Problems such as childhood obesity, ADHD, depression, and poor academic performance have all been linked to a disassociation with the natural world and a lack of unstructured outdoor play.
The couple also learned that an increase in outdoor activity produces children who are more fit and focused and who exhibit a greater respect for themselves, others, and the environment.
The 68-page paperback is targeted to combat those ill effects and serves as both a nature guide and journal.
Bob Wattendorf, chairman for Get Outdoors Florida!, says, “I love the entire approach, from the charming poems and beautiful illustrations, to the fun facts and novel games used to stimulate young minds and get them outdoors exploring nature.”
Because the book is checked for accuracy by experts and tied to national educational standards, parents and teachers are applauding its use in schools and at home.
“The book contains just the sort of activities we look for to help children really see the natural world and make them feel a part of it,” says Beth Geils, Presidential Award Winner for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.
Frances Keiser’s love for exploring nature coupled with a lifetime of poetry writing and independent studies led her to craft her award-winning Adventures of Pelican Pete series, which morphed into other creative endeavors like Backyard Adventures and the forthcoming Backyard Adventures Activity Guides.
Her husband, Hugh Keiser, is the accomplished artist behind each of the books’ accurate yet whimsical illustrations beautifully depicting the varied plants, animals, and habitats described in the new book.
The literary duo has won national awards and honors for their popular Adventures of Pelican Pete series, including Children’s Choices, Book of the Year for Environmental Education, Mom’s Choice, Best Children’s Book series, Teachers’ Choice Award, Accelerated Reader and Reading Counts.
The Keisers are longtime supporters of the Children and Nature movement and Frances is a founding member of the Get Outdoors Florida! coalition whose partners include Governor Charlie Crist, state and national organizations, and various public and private institutions.
“We wanted to lend a hand to our nation’s environmental efforts, and felt that Pelican Pete was just the character to do it—he knows what the e-generation and all its twittering fans may not—that Mother Nature never disappoints,” says Hugh Keiser.
