Turmeric is known as a super food and an herbal medicine by many for having many health benefits. However, like every other medicine in the world, turmeric has its side effects but can also be avoided through different methods.
When taking in aspirins, turmeric may only be used under the consultation of a doctor. This is because it is an anti-platelet agent which prevents clot formation. Those who will be undergoing surgery are not allowed to take in turmeric before it because of this reason. There are many other side effects of turmeric however some of them are:
1. Upset Stomach
Spicy foods can make a stomach upset. Turmeric is known as a spice and is widely used in cooking especially in Indian dishes like curry. Because of this, it can cause the stomach to get upset. This can be avoided by taking in a supplement which uses an enteric coating. This lets the small intestine absorb the nutrients while providing less distress for the stomach.
2. Uterine Stimulation
Other than having anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, turmeric is also a uterine stimulant. This means that it stimulus the uterus of a female which can encourage menstrual flow. This can be dangerous for pregnant and lactating mothers so they must consult a doctor before taking turmeric to avoid hurting their baby.
Because turmeric is an anti-platelet agent like mentioned before, it slows down blood clotting and can lead to bleeding. This is bad to those who have serious injuries since the bleeding will not stop. It is recommended to avoid turmeric when there are injuries. It is also recommended to avoid it when taking anti-coagulants and anti-platelet medications.
4. Diarrhea and Nausea
There is a study which stated that those who take in a lot of turmeric are most likely to experience diarrhea, nausea and sweating. There is a certain recommended amount of turmeric which a person can take in a day. To avoid this side effect, an individual should only take the recommended amount per day.
5. Decrease Chemotherapy Effect
A recent research study has proven that turmeric can inhibit the growth of cancer cells. This was a study done in Korea with the use of cancer cells. Using turmeric while undergoing chemotherapy may inhibit the effects of the session which may bring difficulty for the cancer patient.
