4 October 2010 – Whilst being three legged a trio of volunteers accepted the challenge to climb some of the tallest mountains in England, Wales and Scotland for Diabetes UK. The challenge was sponsored by Carrentals.co.uk, which is a leading car hire price comparison site, and with the help of their donated car hire, saw the trip raise more than £4,500.
Online PR News – 15-October-2010 – – The trio who took part in the fundraising event were named, Ann Bentley, Claire Moon and Steven Craig, all of whom also have diabetes. The three participants have been helping the charity Diabetes UK for more than 15 years specifically with raining money and running the care holidays, which are aimed at children who have been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. The event was noticed by Managing Director Gareth Robinson, who wanted to sponsor the event as his 13 year old daughter also has the condition.
“With my daughter having already been diagnosed with diabetes, I felt a string connection and draw to the charity event. I know that it is very important that support is given to the children who have the condition as well as their families, hence why I really wanted to get involved and see Claire, Ann and Steven raise a large amount of cash for the amazing charity Diabetes UK.” Gareth said.
The event in which the trio completed, took over five days to do so, they climbed tall mountains such as Scafell Pike, Snowdon and Ben Nevis, with them first starting the challenge in Scotland, then Cumbria and finishing Snowdon.
“Myself, Steven and Ann were at a young age diagnosed with diabetes and have for many years not been helping Diabetes UK with their worthwhile care holidays. It is only with donations that the holidays can be provided, and since we have received less this year we have had to reduce the amount of holidays offered, which is sad. This is one of the main reasons we told part in the challenge so then holidays could continue, as they are a vital part of respite for the kids allowing them to spend time with others who have diabetes too.” Claire Moon commented.
Children are able to come to terms with their condition when being part of a care holiday provided by Diabetes UK, as it allows them to be in an environment that is not only supportive but fun for them also. If diabetes is not managed in the correct way it could very well lead to more complicated and long term health problems such as kidney damage and blindness. There could be up to seven injections required each days as well as many blood glucose tests for children who have type 1 diabetes.
