RAD Unveils Pico DSLAM Solution with Ethernet Ring Capabilities at Broadband World Forum Europe

Online PR News – 15-October-2010 – – At Broadband World Forum Europe 2010, which will be held in Paris October 26-28, RAD Data Communications will premiere the ASMi-54 SHDSL.bis pico DSLAM to transport Ethernet over rate-enhanced SHDSL.bis pairs in both point-to-point and standard Ethernet ring topologies.

“This is a new generation of broadband access devices for high speed, low latency services; labeling it a modem is anachronistic because it in no way resembles the modems we used to know,” states Meira Erez, ASMi-54 Product Line Manager at RAD Data Communications. “Carriers and ISPs find this combination of cost-effectiveness and high performance the preferred solution for bringing multipoint Ethernet connectivity and video services to previously un-served or under-served rural areas,” she continues. “As such, it aggregates Ethernet traffic from remote locations and delivers it to the PSN over a Fast Ethernet fiber or 22 Mbps bonded copper connection.”

Ethernet QoS and Ring Protection in a Single Box Solution
The modem is also designed to be deployed in the type of ring and multi-drop topologies commonly utilized by transportation and utility networks. For such applications, the ASMi-54 provides service resiliency and protection by implementing the ITU-T G.8032 Ethernet Ring Protection Switching standard for up to 11.4 Mbps of bandwidth. Both the user and network sides of the unit feature four Ethernet ports, which eliminates the need for an external switch and enables different Ethernet streams to be transported simultaneously. Quality of Service (QoS) attributes enable prioritization of each Ethernet service across the DSL line. Most importantly, the Ethernet ports can be connected over available infrastructure, both copper or, by adding a RAD SFP transceiver, fiber. By using a fiber line, a longer transmission range can be achieved.
