Meet The 79-Year-Old Running For London Mayor On A Legalise Cannabis Ticket
12/07/2015

Lee Harris - One of the original foot soldiers of the '60's counter culture, the veteran activist is running to become the CISTA candidate for Mayor of London.

Online PR News – 07-December-2015 – London – One of the original foot soldiers of the '60's counter culture scene, Lee Harris is embarking on a new challenge. A South African who in 1955 was one of the very few white delegates to work with Nelson Mandela & The Congress Of The People, architects of the original anti-apartheid Freedom Charter, he's now entering into politics again, this time attempting to become the London Mayoral candidate for the Cannabis Is Safer Than Alcohol Party.

CISTA, founded in Regent's Park by Paul Birch, co-creator of one of the first social
networking websites, Bebo, stood 32 candidates at the 2015 General Election garnering significant media & public interest. The party held hustings at Conway Hall on the 26th of November where Lee was one of 4 candidates. Notable for the quality of all the contestants, Lee's wit, warmth, humour and intelligence shone through and he has now established himself as one of the favourites to win.

Having lived in London for over 60 years Lee has met & worked with an incredible array of people from Orson Welles to Howard 'Mr. Nice' Marks to Allen Ginsberg and a great many more.

Once anti-drugs it was his intervention which led to the banning of amphetamines & The Misuse of Drugs Act 1971, something which he's regretted ever since. Going from a prohibitionist to a libertarian he became immersed in the 1960's counter culture, working with underground theatre groups and art 'happenings'. He established London's oldest head shop "Alchemy" on The Portobello Road in 1972 an establishment which is still going strong today. Using Portobello as a base he launched both Underground Comix & Europe's first specialist cannabis magazine, "Homegrown", early editions of which are now highly prized collector's items. He arranged for Baba Ram Das, Charter 88 and Alan Ginsbergh to attend & to speak at the legendary Megatripolis Club.

He also sold premium Ginseng & Royal Jelly to Fortnum & Mason. One of his biggest clients was former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

Voting is open until December 10th and can be done by liking The Lee Harris for CISTA London Mayor Facebook Page or by joining CISTA. Lee is available for interviews & appearances.
