London Drainage Facilities Comments on 4.28m Flood Defence Project to Protect Historic London Parks

An award-winning flood defence project in South London creates a flood storage solution at two historic parks.

Online PR News – 02-November-2015 – London – Costing approximately £4.28 million, an award winning flood defence project in Southwark, South London is intended to help with flood storage at two historic parks.

By combining above and below-ground temporary flood storage, the design will capture water during heavy periods of rain.

The project, led by Southwark Council, provides much-needed protection for both Herne Hill and Dulwich – areas that are extremely susceptible to flooding due to being in a low-lying catchment of the Effra River.

At both parks, the designs involve a mixture of natural earth bunding, a detention basin and dwarf-brick retaining wall structures above ground and a geocellular block storage underground that plays a key element in the flood defence, as well as being sensitive to the needs of the historic parks.

It was reported that the public were keen to retain the appearance of the parks, therefore measures were put in place to ensure that significant areas were not lost. The block systems are load-bearing, so could revert back to their original appearance, and because each tank did not exceed 1 metre in depth they could be covered with top soil, making them virtually invisible.

“Implementing flood defence in areas of London that are always at high risk is essential to keeping local landmarks, businesses and homes away from destructive floodwater,” says Fraser Ruthven, Head of Marketing and Growth at London Drainage.

“From the horrors of the Somerset floods a few years ago to more localised flooding, we are dealing with an important environmental issue which here that our authorities need to keep on top of if we are to prevent unnecessary future damage.

“This is why this particular scheme in Southwark is good for the capital – it’s safeguarding the protection of future generations,” he adds.
