Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan-based moving company, United Moving Services, offers advice on organizing ahead of a big move
Online PR News – 11-September-2015 – Baltimore, MD – “Whether you are headed to another part of the Baltimore-Washington metro-area or preparing for a cross-country relocation, moving will present its own fair share of challenges,” says Gary Stone, president of Unified Moving Services (http://www.unifiedmovingservices.com), a Maryland full-service moving company that specializes in both residential and commercial moves in the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area. “When preparing for a move, you will likely look around your home, surveying your prized possessions and accumulated goods, and begin to wonder how you will ever get started organizing the move.”
However, Stone says that moving does not have to be a complete headache.
He offers the following tips on clearing the how to clear a path to a smooth move.
Create an Inventory
According to Stone, the first step toward getting organized is to create an inventory of what will be moved.
“Grab a notepad and begin going through your space, room by room, noting exactly which items you will take with you,” Stone says. “You may be surprised at what you find, and you may end up wanting to get rid of some things instead of moving them.”
Track Your Essentials
“There are certain basics that you will want to set aside so that they will be on hand while you pack and unpack,” Stone says. “These items may include basic necessities such as toilet paper, a toothbrush and a change of clothing.”
He says that it also may include more specific items such as a basic set of tools, kitchen utensils, or even a favorite book.
Stone says that once you have an idea of what to keep and what you can live without, you should consider a purge. S
“Start with friends and family in the neighborhood to see if they can use any of your unwanted items,” Stone says. “You can also donate. Thrift stores and homeless shelters will happily accept clothes and furniture, and donations are a great way to recycle your possessions instead of simply throwing them away. “
Group Similar Items
Stone says that once you have an idea of what to keep and what you can live without, you should consider a purge.
“After shedding your unwanted possessions, the next step is to start packing,” Stone says. “However, with packing comes planning. Start by grouping similar items together.”
For example, you are not going to pack a fragile figurine in the same box as your cast-iron frying pans. Stone suggests keeping all parts or pairs of things together. Curtain rod hangers, mirror bolts and other small hardware items should be placed in plastic bags and taped or tied securely to the article to which they belong, he says.
Pack and Label
Your inventory is set and your items are grouped. Now comes the fun part of packing, Stone says.
“You may think you can just throw everything in a box, but if you want your items to survive the move, you are going to need to take a more tactical approach,” he explains.
Pack small, fragile, individually wrapped items separately or a few together in small boxes, cushioning with crushed or shredded paper. Stone suggests placing small boxes in a single large box, filling in spaces with crushed paper.
“Avoid overloading cartons but strive for a firm pack that will prevent items from shifting,” he says. “The cover should close easily without force but should not bend inward.”
He also says that it is important to label.
“Not knowing what is in each box can spell disaster when you unpack,” Stone says. “You might even consider color-coding your boxes for each room in your new house.”
