Online PR News – 14-September-2009 – – Mumbai, September 14, 2009: As the world’s leading manufacturer of high-performance rubber, LANXESS AG is celebrating the centenary of synthetic rubber’s invention by the chemist Fritz Hofmann by holding a high-profile scientific colloquium on Saturday, September 12.
“With this event we are sending out a signal and giving the innovative high-tech material synthetic rubber the attention that it deserves," says Axel C. Heitmann, Chairman of the Board of Management of LANXESS AG. “Synthetic rubber is a development whose importance for modern society and advanced technology can hardly be overestimated. 100 years after its invention, we are celebrating a material that is still more versatile, flexible and fascinating than almost any other.”

The presentations will also focus on new forms of application and the future significance of synthetic rubber. The event will round off with a discussion of the individual issues brought up. The colloquium will be moderated by the well-known German journalist and presenter Nina Ruge.
The foundation for synthetic rubber was laid in 1909 by chemist Fritz Hofmann with his discovery of the elastic material methyl isoprene. On September 12 of that year, the Imperial Patents Office granted Elberfelder Farbenfabriken, Hofmann’s employer, patent number 250690 for the “process of manufacturing artificial rubber”.
