Online PR News – 10-April-2015 – San Diego, CA – WHAT: Poway Dermatology’s board-certified dermatologist (Patrick Blake, MD), in conjunction with the American Academy of Dermatology’s Spot Skin Cancer campaign, is offering full or partial skin exams at no charge. Each exam takes about 10 minutes. If a concerning lesion is identified, patients will be referred for biopsies.
WHEN: Monday, May 4th (Melanoma Monday) 8:30AM – 4:30 PM
WHO: Anyone who has not had a skin exam in the past year
WHERE: Poway Dermatology, 15725 Pomerado Road, Suite 102, Poway, CA 92064
WHY: To raise awareness of melanoma and other types of skin cancer, and to encourage early detection through self-exams, the American Academy of Dermatology designates the first Monday in May as Melanoma Monday®.
On average, one American dies from melanoma every hour. Melanoma is the most common cancer for young adults.
When caught early, skin cancer – including melanoma – is highly treatable. The five-year survival rate for people whose melanoma is detected and treated before it spreads to the lymph nodes is 98 percent. When diagnosed at a late stage, survival drops to 16%.
The AAD’s Spot Skin Cancer volunteers have conducted more than 2.4 million screenings, detected over 200,000 suspicious lesions, and exposed over 26,000 potential melanomas since the launch of the program in 1985.
Interested individuals are welcome to walk-in at any time during the day. However, to minimize wait times, an appointment may be scheduled by calling 858-397-5755. To learn more about ways to prevent and detect skin cancer, or to find a local dermatologist, visit SpotSkinCancer.org.
