Specialist Language Courses is delighted to announce the launch of its CPD-accredited online course, ‘Online English for Nurses: Getting the Essentials Right’

Online PR News – 18-March-2015 – Lewes, East Sussex – Specialist Language Courses is delighted to announce the launch of its CPD-accredited online course, ‘Online English for Nurses: Getting the Essentials Right’, designed especially for international nurses working or looking to work in an international healthcare environment.

The course was inspired by the increasing number of nurses coming to work in the UK and Ireland, particularly from Europe, who are being recruited to deal with the shortage of nurses in hospitals, care homes and community-based healthcare settings. Many nurses, such as those from Spain, Portugal, Italy and Romania, have excellent clinical training and skills, but sometimes lack the English language skills to communicate effectively with patients, their families, and other healthcare professionals, such as doctors, fellow nurses, and HCAs.

‘Online English for Nurses: Getting the Essentials Right’ is a 100-hour course designed to develop international nurses’ medical English and healthcare-related communication skills, so they can talk with confidence and accuracy while at work. Topics include talking about pain, pressure area care, IV therapy, breathing problems, administering medications, dealing with falls, infections, post-operative care, and end-of-life care.

Chris Moore, Managing Director of Specialist Language Courses, said, ‘International nurses do an amazing job in the UK health service. We wanted to create a flexible online course that would make it easier for them to settle in to a new country and job, give outstanding care to patients, and build strong relationships with fellow healthcare professionals. As the course is CPD-accreditedis also great for their CV.’
The course has a strong cultural element, so nurses get to see how roles and relationships work in the UK. As part of this, nurses learn to introduce and describe themselves appropriately, see how they are expected to interact with HCAs and doctors, practise giving and receiving handovers, and analyse and fill in authentic hospital charts and documents.

‘Online English for Nurses: Getting the Essentials Right’ was written by renowned Medical English writer, lecturer and teacher trainer, Virginia Allum, herself a practising Registered Nurse. Virginia is a widely published writer, including co-authoring the ‘Cambridge English for Nursing’ text books, and creating practice materials for the Cambridge Occupational English Test.

‘As a practising nurse, I see the challenges faced by international nurses close up. This course will help them get over the communication difficulties they face at work and enable them to quickly settle into a new life in the UK or Ireland. At the moment, too many return home as they find the language hard to deal with.

The course is designed to be engaging and fun, with multiple task types, animated videos, audio exercises, and dialogue-based role play. Nurses can also check their progress at any time and see how many exercises they have completed, their scores and their time spent on the course. When they successfully finish the course, they receive a certificate outlining their achievement, accredited by the CPD Standards Office to be 80 CPD hours.

‘Online English for Nurses: Getting the Essentials Right’ is available now on the SLC website for £159 + VAT.
