MeteoGroup's Model Output Statistics (MOS) performed strongly as warnings of a historic New York blizzard proved unmerited
Online PR News – 30-January-2015 – New York – January 2015: One of the world’s leading private sector weather forecasting companies, MeteoGroup, has outperformed the weather forecasters of the main stream media in forecasting moderate snow amounts for New York City while residents had been told to expect a powerful blizzard.
The National Weather Service, which issued a blizzard warning for the greater New York City area, forecast gusts of wind up to 50 miles per hour and snow accumulation of at least one to two feet. Mayor Bill de Blasio said on Sunday that the storm approaching on Monday was likely to be one of the biggest to ever strike New York City, and he urged people to stay indoors to avoid powerful winds, low visibility and treacherous road conditions.
However, by Monday evening, it was evident that this would not be the case. On Tuesday morning Central Park had only 6.3 inches of snow, and with the National Weather Service and other forecasting services acknowledging there might be as little as 2 more inches on the way, the press had dubbed the event a “blizzard bust”.
Contrary to other forecasts MeteoGroup's Model Output Statistics (MOS), their proprietary statistical weather forecasting technique which improves model forecasts, had forecast around 10 inches of snow fall in NYC area, which fits very accurately to the recorded measurements of between 9.8 inches in Central Park to 11.4 inches at LaGuardia.
This was possible using a technique developed by MeteoGroup which combines several models into one forecast, thereby resulting in highly accurate, location-specific forecasts.
Kevin Stenson, MeteoGroup’s Business Manager USA, commented, "In this particular situation there was a risk of a significant weather event which was rightly highlighted, but as the event moved closer there was plenty of objective data indicating a much less severe event for New York City. Our data driven system took this into account and thusly we were able to back away early from sensationalising the effect.”
