Frameworks used for enabling spectrum sharing in lower frequency bands can also be applied to identifying and enabling opportunities in higher frequency bands
Online PR News – 15-January-2015 – Washington, DC – The Wireless Innovation Forum (www.WirelessInnovation.org" target="_blank" class="highlight_link" rel="nofollow">http://www.WirelessInnovation.org), a non-profit international industry association dedicated to driving the future of radio communications and systems worldwide, today filed comments with the FCC regarding the Use of Bands above 24 GHz for Mobile Communications (Docket 14-177). In this response, the Forum commends the Commission for beginning the process of exploring mobile communications in bands traditionally used for fixed, satellite, scientific, and defense applications.
In the comments, the Forum states that establishing a flexible regulatory framework and encouraging technical developments in this frequency range could ultimately provide broadband mobility at data rates unheard of today, even if only small portions of the radio spectrum above 24 GHz are opened.
"The vast majority of regulated wireless bandwidth falls above 24 GHz," according to Dr. Andrew Clegg, Forum participant and Google Spectrum Engineering Lead. "It makes sense to facilitate access to some of this bandwidth to enable innovative new mobile services at speeds that rival today’s wired connections."
"The technical challenges of using such high frequencies will take care of themselves, given a sufficiently flexible regulatory climate," Clegg notes.
The group’s comments are consistent with existing identification of specific areas of major innovations that are required to create the foundation for next-generation wireless devices, per the Top Ten Most Wanted Wireless Innovations, which is the Forum’s most downloaded document (http://groups.winnforum.org/winnforum_top_ten). Comments are also consistent with the Forum’s mission statement of advocating for the innovative utilization of spectrum and advancing radio technologies that support essential or critical communications (http://groups.winnforum.org/advocacy).
Included in its response to the "Above 24 GHz" Notice of Inquiry, the Forum notes that frameworks employed for enabling spectrum sharing in lower frequency bands, such as its multistakeholder group now addressing sharing in the 3.6 GHz small-cell band (http://groups.winnforum.org/d/do/6495), can also be applied to identifying and enabling future spectrum sharing opportunities in the higher frequency bands (http://groups.winnforum.org/d/do/6963).
