Frequently Asked Question Video About Supplementation Options Post Bariatric Surgery

Angela Cole, physician’s assistant at Blossom Bariatrics, educates about supplementation options every patient needs to know.

Online PR News – 23-December-2014 – Las Vegas, Nevada – In 2008, the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery released its Integrated Health Nutritional Guidelines report (also available as a .pdf download), which states that “a comprehensive bariatric program includes nutritional supplementation guidance.”

Angela Cole, a physician’s assistant at Blossom Bariatrics, explains the importance of supplementation options post bariatric surgery and that patients should receive supplementation via different methods: oral, I.V., or injection.

Cole explains, “In order to heal from surgery, you need to have adequate nutritional intake.” This is because, “A common side effect of bariatric surgery is nutritional deficiency, including vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients. A very common reason for these nutrient deficiencies is it is difficult for your body to absorb the nutrients you take by mouth.”

Integrated Health Nutritional Guidelines promotes, “Taking daily micronutrient supplements and eating foods high in vitamins and minerals are important aspects of any successful weight loss program.” The report also cautions patients who become lax with supplementation, “It is important for the bariatric patient to take vitamin and mineral supplements, not only to prevent adverse health conditions that can arise after surgery, but because some nutrients such as calcium can enhance weight loss and help prevent weight regain.”

Cole concludes, “Blossom Bariatrics offers a variety of nutritional supplements given [orally,] by I.V.[, or] injection, including the Myer’s Cocktail, B complex injections, biotin injections, and some other injections that can help support the immune system [...] The result of better nutrition is faster healing times, fewer complications, and an increased energy level during your recovery.”
