Oral surgeon in Dallas, TX provides free facial cleft surgery and medical care in Bangladesh.
Online PR News – 17-December-2014 – Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas – Dallas oral surgeon, John Wallace, D.D.S., M.D., recently returned from a mission trip to Bangladesh in conjunction with the non-profit organization Smile Bangladesh. The oral surgeon was part of a medical and dental team that provided individuals afflicted with facial cleft deformities with free surgeries and medical care to repair facial clefts.
Dr. Wallace is a well-known oral surgeon in Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas (DFW) and is the co-owner of the practice Dallas Oral Surgery Associates. In addition to volunteering his time and talents on the mission trip, which took place from November 9 – 14, 2014, Dr. Wallace was joined by his Chief of Operations and Anesthesia Provider, Jeremy Newton, CRNA, MSN. Newton accompanied Dr. Wallace on the trip to provide anesthesia for the surgeries, along with a few other volunteer anesthesia providers.
According to Smile Bangladesh, it is estimated that there are approximately 300,000 individuals in Bangladesh living with unrepaired cleft lips and cleft palates. However, there are less than thirty surgeons in the country trained to perform cleft surgery and the majority of people in the country affected by facial cleft deformities lack the resources to have the deformity repaired, don’t even know the deformity can be repaired or are from rural areas. This means they cannot afford or are unable to gain access to the medical care they require.
Smile Bangladesh supports and coordinates the efforts of volunteer surgeons and medical teams that travel to rural and urban areas throughout Bangladesh to provide free facial cleft surgery. The surgeries, which generally take about an hour per patient, transform lives. This is the second time Dr. Wallace has volunteered his expertise to help Bengalis suffering from facial cleft deformities. The DFW oral surgeon completed a similar mission trip in 2012.
“My first trip to Bangladesh as a volunteer with Smile Bangladesh was so rewarding,” explains Dr. Wallace. “That’s what prompted me to make the trip once again. It’s been a passion of mine to be able to help those suffering from cleft deformities, and being able to travel halfway around the world to provide this surgery to individuals, mostly children, who would never otherwise be able to have it done was life-changing.”
In addition to treating facial cleft deformities, the Dallas oral surgeon provides many oral surgery procedures, including dental implants, implant-supported dentures, wisdom teeth removal and corrective jaw surgery, among others. Dallas Oral Surgery Associates, the practice co-owned by Dr. Wallace, has two locations – one in Dallas and the other in Plano, Texas. In addition to his volunteer efforts, the DFW oral surgeon has been named as one of the best oral surgeons in Dallas by D Magazine, a recognition bestowed upon him by his peers.
