IUI being a type of ART, is a method for infertility treatment. Properly washed & concentrated semen through the chemical treatments are placed directly in the lining of womb (i.e. uterus). Whereas the sperms were placed in vagina in older insemination techniques. This procedure was comparatively easier than the current procedure, but the success rates was very low. The purpose of IUI is to allow access of sperm inside the fallopian tube to fertilize a waiting egg, leading to a successful normal pregnancy. Undetermined infertility: IUI procedure is the first preferred technique in the case of undetermined infertility causes with medications.

Subfertility due to Male factors: Semen Analysis of the male partner is one of the initial step taken while conducting infertility tests. If the semen reports depicts low concentration & motility or any abnormality in sperm shape &size then IUI is preferred. IUI treatment first stage cycle consists of separation of highly motile sperms, normal sperms from the low motile sperms.

Most couples who turn to IUI have a 5 to 20 percent chance of becoming pregnant with each cycle. Your chances will be closer to 20 percent if you take fertility drugs in conjunction with the procedure.

Infertility due to cervical factors: If the cervix is at the lower end of uterus and provides opening between vagina & uterus then the mucus produced by cervix at the time of ovulation provides the best factors for sperm to travel from vagina into the fallopian tubes. In case of thick cervical mucus, movement of sperm will be delayed. The catheter places sperm directly inside the uterus by increasing the chance for a sperm to meet an egg resulting fertilization.

Allergy due to semen: This is a very rare case, when a women might face certain allergy due to her partner’s semen. This is caused when the semen gets in contact with the skin during ejaculation and causes redness, burning & swelling into the vagina. Use of protective measures like condom can avoid allergies in these cases. If the allergy is severe, then IUI can be effective since many of the proteins are removed out of the semen before the procedure.

Intrauterine insemination includes careful coordination before the initiation of the actual procedure:

Semen sample preparation: Semen sample of the male partner is collected at the doctor’s office or a frozen healthy donor sperm, can be thawed & prepared. As certain proteins in semen can cause reactions in the woman’s body that can inhibit pregnancy, Semen sample is thoroughly washed in a systematic way to separate the highly active, normal & low quality sperms and also the other elements & proteins. Chance of conceiving can increase by using a small amount of highly concentrated and healthy sperm sample for the procedure.

Monitoring for ovulation: As the timing of IUI is important, monitoring signs of ovulation is critical as slight delay may effect severely. This can be carried out at home by using a urine ovulation predictor kit which detects the release of luteinizing hormone (LH).Otherwise by an imaging technique that lets the doctor visualize ovaries & egg growth. Those who choose an ultrasound to monitor ovulation cycle are given with an injection of HCG (i.e., human chorionic gonadotropin)to produce more eggs at that time.

Timings: Determination of correct time for IUI is very crucial, mostly it is taken up post one or two day of ovulation cycle.
