Italian staircase designer chosen for ‘Bosco Verticale’

After snagging the International Highrise Award 2014, Milan’s ‘Bosco Verticale’ unveils collaboration with Italian staircase designer, Fontanot

Online PR News – 17-December-2014 – Milano, Italy – At the heels of its win for “The Vertical Forest” as “the most beautiful and innovative highrise in the world,” Colombo Costruzioni has announced its collaboration with Italian designer, Fontanot, to construct the staircases of the skyscraper’s entrance lobbies. The lobbies, which feature large transparent surfaces that melt with exterior surfaces, boasts a unique scenery celebrated by the greenery of the “Giardino De Castillia,” in a style that celebrates Italian elegance and creativity.

Fontanot worked very closely with Coima Image, who took care of all the interior design and stylistic aspects of the buildings. They also collaborated with architect Maurizio De Pellegrini and Hines, the developer of the entire investment project.

“It is a very important project for us,” explains the Fontanot team. “It is prestigious, influential and world renowned. The recent prize that Bosco Verticale has been awarded as the most beautiful skyscraper in the world, has only added to our satisfaction in having taken part in such an important initiative”

The staircase, located in Building E of Bosco Verticale, is a Fascia Special model, with lateral structures in stainless steel and a polished finish. The railing is composed of extra clear glass panels, with a stainless steel handrail on the internal side of the panels and stone treads, supplied by the client. It is 120cm wide, composed of four flights and has two landings, one of which is overhanging. The Fontanot staircase connects the lobby and a multifunctional hall.

For Fontanot, the partnership comes at a crucial point in the history of the company. From a family-run business of handcrafted staircases that began on the Italian coastal town of Rimini over forty years ago, Fontanot has become an empire in the Italian design world with its prestigious contract jobs and collaborations, and has recently begun to branch out into the UK and US.

The Vertical Forest plan is part of a larger scheme called Porta Nuova, which aims to showcase innovative green solutions over a 300,000 sqm range in time for World Expo, set to be held in Milan in 2015. It has been a particularly notable year for Fontanot in terms of Expo-related eco-friendly projects. They were also commissioned by Japanese Architect, Arata Isozaki, to build the staircase in Isozaki Tower, set to be the tallest building in Italy when it is finished for Expo. The Bosco Verticale staircase, set to be installed by the end of 2014, is yet another project that secures Fontanot’s foothold as a key player in innovative staircase design.
