Online PR News – 19-September-2014 – NEW YORK USA – Independent film team to crowd-fund and producepost-apocalyptic, coming-of-age live-action short film

NEW YORK, Sep, 2014–New Lot Attractions, an independent start-up founded by Jeremy Footman, Rashidah Bernay, and Shareef Snuggs, is preparing to launch a Cyber Monday (Dec. 1) crowd-funding campaign via IndieGoGo for their first production, “Heavenly Mushroom.”

The live-action short is set in a post-apocalyptic world in which Earth has yet to completely replenish itself 300 years after a “Great Fire.”Now called “Third World”, Earth is an overpopulated ghetto where plant life is unable to grow and plagued with constant disease, famine, and turmoil. The story centers on Grace, a 16 year-old girlwho sets out on a journey with her robot companion, Nature, to save the world.

“Heavenly Mushroom is a fairytale,” Snuggs said. “Like most moral, coming-of-age tales, the audience follows an adolescent overcoming the struggle against adulthood. But for Grace, it’s in such dire circumstances.”

The film also features a race of sub-humans that has emerged from the ashes, known as the Magus, who must partner with mankind to determine what the future holds.

“Third World has suffered so much loss, plant life is nearly gone, half of mankind is transformed into mutants, and now a deadly plague is widespread,” Snuggs explained. “Loss is a major, universal theme in our story. It’s how our characters learn to pick themselves back up again.”

Inspiration for the film, which will be shot using iPi Soft and Faceshift, came from stories written by Snuggs himself as well as work from filmmakers such as Akira Kurosawa, Yusujiro Ozu, Hayao Miyazaki, Walt Disney, and Orson Welles.

“In the fall of 2009, I found out that I was going to be a father,” Snuggs said. “At the time I was writing and producing a spec film based on a video game franchise, which ultimately failed. I knew I had to shift gears and create something worthwhile so my son could have opportunities I never had. That’s when ‘Heavenly Mushroom’ was born.”

Snuggs, a freelance videographer and editor for 14 years, met Footman, a resident poet of Dead Poet’s Society in New York, and Bernay, a Queens-born writer and actress, while the trio attended LaGuardia Community College.

All three hold a life-long passion for film and the arts and collectively formed New Lot Attractions, an independent multimedia production company specializing in the development, production, and distribution of online content.

The group has chosen crowd-funding to give fans of independent film the chance to be a part of the process and “funding the little guy.”
