Autism can certainly be a challenge for young students, especially if they are placed in educational situations not well suited for their special needs. Fortunately, in the New York City area an educational option exists which not only uses therapeutic methods that have widespread endorsement, but also has a long track record of success, Rebecca School. The school recently announced the start of their 2014 school year, welcoming students from ages 4 to 21.

Rebecca School employs the DIR model, which has been the subject of a tremendous amount of positive feedback both in academic journals and in the media.

“The DIR model has helped many children with developmental delays such as autism spectrum disorders learn to relate to adults and peers with warmth and intimacy, communicate meaningfully with emotional gestures and words, and think with a high level of abstract reasoning and empathy,” commented a spokesperson from the school. “The DIR model allows us to integrate emotional, social, intellectual, and educational goals for each child.”

Rebecca school follows a 12 month year, and makes available tours of the school on request.

The school has been open since September 2006 when it started with 48 students and 53 staff members. Since 2006 the student population has more than doubled as the number of services available at the school has expanded and continues to grow each year.

Families continue to give the school enthusiastic endorsements.

A parent recently commented in a five star review on GreatSchools.org, “This school is right on target. The implement the occupational therapy throughout the day to help with learning, social skills behavior, etc. They implement the speech throughout the day... Rebecca school is a dream come true.. More schools like this are needed.”
