Online PR News – 01-September-2014 – Albany,GA – ALBANY , GA - Following the success of the 8th Annual Albany Marathon and Half Marathon, the Albany Marathon Board of Directors presented a ceremonial check of $20,000 to Willson Hospice House at a press conference on Tuesday, August 26, 2014 at 2PM.
Since its inaugural race in 2006, Albany Marathon, Inc. has been fortunate to consistently donate funds to the Willson Hospice House. " This check brings the total donations for the eight years of the marathon to $165, 000, " said Rashelle Beasley, Albany Marathon Race Director. "It's an honor to produce an event that brings the community together and invites the world to our doorsteps especially since the proceeds go to such a vital facility for Albany and Southwest Georgia."
Earlier this year, the Board of Directors presented Thronateeska Heritage Center with $5,000 ceremonial check. Each year, runners race through the historic train depot and marathon organizers take over the entire area. In 2013, due to the Flint River flooding, the alternate course was utilized and finished at Thronateeska's plaza. "The donation allowed the marathon board to show a small token of appreciation ", Beasley explained. "This race could not happen without the community and our partners throughout the city."
This year's race welcomed 1,472 registrants from 41 states, Austria, Canada, United Kingdom and Venezuela on March 1, 2014. Of those who finished, 18.9 percent qualified for the Boston Marathon. That statistic currently ranks Albany's race as one of the top ten qualifiers for a second year in a row.
Scheduled annually for the first Saturday in March, the next race will run on March 7, 2015 at 7AM. Registration is now open through www.active.com and www.albanymarathon.com.
