Leading New York website development and visual communications firm says that when signing a contract and putting down money, be sure you can spot a “con.”
Online PR News – 26-August-2009 – New York, New York – In this economic climate, it is easy to fall victim to deals that may otherwise seem “too good to be true,” says Peter Crisafi, Vice President of dzine it, Inc., a Manhattan website development and visual communications firm. More importantly, he says it is the same economic climate that brings out some of the worst people looking for a quick buck by taking advantage of unsuspecting victims.
“There are a lot of unsavory characters out there who are willing to promise you a service in exchange for a fee, but are actually just trying to pull a fast one,” says Crisafi. “Regardless of whether it is a person who claims to be a website developer, graphic designer, or offers any service for that matter, there are a number of ways you can protect yourself.”
Crisafi says the best way to verify that a person is not only legitimate, but qualified to do the job they are charged with, is to check their references. Someone who takes pride in their work will not only be able to offer references but also a way for you to back them up.
“The first sign of someone who is not honest or legitimate is their inability to produce valid references,” says Crisafi. “These people typically speak vaguely about their history and though they tell a good story, are never willing to give up details.”
Another way to check the legitimacy of an individual providing a service is to check to see if that individual has a website or if there is any reference to them on the Internet. Nearly all service providers can be traced in some way online.
“If a guy walks in off the street and says that he is the best at what he does, there must be a record of that individual somewhere out there. It is important to locate that person’s history and conduct a background check of some sort, particularly if the history is short,” says Crisafi.
Crisafi says that whether hiring someone to perform a service, or even hiring a full time employee, it is imperative that you do your homework.
“These people exist and they are the type of people that give service providers with ethical standards a bad name,” says Crisafi. “Do your homework so that you too do not become a victim.”
