“I could not have that flag displayed behind me as I attempted to administer justice,” Carlos E. Moore, Esq., author and one of The Five Brothers, states as he recounts his first day of becoming the first African-American Municipal Judge Pro Tem for the city of Clarksdale, Mississippi. His powerful leadership in fighting for justice is evident throughout his new compelling memoir, recounting his life as a Black man in a world meant to act against him.
Carlos E. Moore describes the now-retired Mississippi state flag, which disturbingly held the Confederate emblem, as representing “the subjugation of my people, lynchings, murder, and enslavement.” He continued to state, “We’re supposed to honor that flag in spite of what it stands for? My little daughter is expected to honor that flag? No.” On November 3rd, 2020, Mississippi became the last state to retire the flag. From finding out heart-wrenching news at only 8-years-old to opening his own law firm, Carlos captivates readers through his journey in becoming a successful black man against all odds.
