BARBARA BATES FOUNDATION to host “Walk Where You Live’ a fundraiser for Mount Sinai Health System

The Barbara Bates Foundation, in partnership with Sinai Health System, will host “Walk Where You Live,” 5K walk/run to benefit breast cancer awareness programs

Online PR News – 23-May-2014 – CHICAGO – (CHICAGO) -- The Barbara Bates Foundation, in partnership with Sinai Health System, will host “Walk Where You Live,” a 5K walk/run to benefit breast cancer awareness programs operated by Sinai Health System. The event will be held on Saturday, August 16 at Douglas Park. Registration and check-in begin at 6:00 AM, and the walk/run begins promptly at 8:00 AM.

Since 2012, the Barbara Bates Foundation has contributed over $100,000 to fund an institutional grant on ‘Disparity and Education of Breast Cancer’ in partnership with Sinai Health System. The grant serves to address and educate individuals about the disparities in access to breast cancer care faced by women in the African American and Latino communities. The funds were raised through the Foundation’s efforts, most notably through “Knocking Out Breast Cancer,” a fashion show featuring a special collection of clothing created by fashion designer Barbara Bates and modeled by breast cancer survivors. This year the Foundation has expanded its fundraising efforts by initiating the “Walk Where You Live” 5K to further engage community members in this education effort.

“This event is designed to raise funds for breast cancer awareness while encouraging a sense of community among residents,” said Barbara Bates, president of the Barbara Bates Foundation. “Programs cannot be effective if residents don’t know they are available. I’m proud that Sinai Health System is helping us reach out to the community it serves.”

“Sinai Health System is proud of the partnership we’ve formed with the Barbara Bates Foundation over the past three years,” said Pam Khosla, MD, Chief of Oncology. “Taking this next step to engage our surrounding community is necessary for building a healthier population. ”Poverty and racial inequities, not genetics, are responsible for the higher death rate from breast cancer among women of color, even though more white women contract the disease.

The Chicago Park District is also a sponsor of Walk Where You Live. The event will kick off at the corners of S. California and W. Ogden Avenue at 8:00 AM. Registration is $50 per person and free for those 12 years and under. Online registration is available by visiting You may also call (312) 808-8091 or email with questions.
