The Barbara Bates Foundation, in partnership with Sinai Health System, will host âWalk Where You Live,â 5K walk/run to benefit breast cancer awareness programs
Online PR News – 23-May-2014 – CHICAGO – (CHICAGO) -- The Barbara Bates Foundation, in partnership with Sinai Health System, will host âWalk Where You Live,â a 5K walk/run to benefit breast cancer awareness programs operated by Sinai Health System. The event will be held on Saturday, August 16 at Douglas Park. Registration and check-in begin at 6:00 AM, and the walk/run begins promptly at 8:00 AM.
Since 2012, the Barbara Bates Foundation has contributed over $100,000 to fund an institutional grant on âDisparity and Education of Breast Cancerâ in partnership with Sinai Health System. The grant serves to address and educate individuals about the disparities in access to breast cancer care faced by women in the African American and Latino communities. The funds were raised through the Foundationâs efforts, most notably through âKnocking Out Breast Cancer,â a fashion show featuring a special collection of clothing created by fashion designer Barbara Bates and modeled by breast cancer survivors. This year the Foundation has expanded its fundraising efforts by initiating the âWalk Where You Liveâ 5K to further engage community members in this education effort.
âThis event is designed to raise funds for breast cancer awareness while encouraging a sense of community among residents,â said Barbara Bates, president of the Barbara Bates Foundation. âPrograms cannot be effective if residents donât know they are available. Iâm proud that Sinai Health System is helping us reach out to the community it serves.â
âSinai Health System is proud of the partnership weâve formed with the Barbara Bates Foundation over the past three years,â said Pam Khosla, MD, Chief of Oncology. âTaking this next step to engage our surrounding community is necessary for building a healthier population. âPoverty and racial inequities, not genetics, are responsible for the higher death rate from breast cancer among women of color, even though more white women contract the disease.
The Chicago Park District is also a sponsor of Walk Where You Live. The event will kick off at the corners of S. California and W. Ogden Avenue at 8:00 AM. Registration is $50 per person and free for those 12 years and under. Online registration is available by visiting www.barbarabatesfoundation.org. You may also call (312) 808-8091 or email firstname.lastname@example.org with questions. Checks should be made payable to the Barbara Bates Foundation and may be mailed to 2031 S. Indiana Chicago, IL 60616.
