ACEC Awards Honors for Two Transportation Projects

A 25 year old Silicon Valley specialty engineering firm was recently recognized for its work on Devil's Slide and Foresthill Bridge. These two public works projects underwent extensive renovation and reconstruction efforts that also made both less seismically vulnerable.

The Honor Awards are for the firm's work on the Devil's Slide / Tom Lantos Tunnels and the Foresthill Bridge Seismic Retrofit.

The Awards were formally presented on February 3, 2014 at the ACEC California's 2014 Engineering Excellence Awards & Legislative Reception at the Hyatt Regency in Sacramento. The evening highlighted the industry's efforts to make people's lives safer, more sustainable and more enjoyable.

Devil's Slide is a treacherous stretch of Highway 1 perched above a cliff in San Mateo County. Devil's Slide confounded drivers and engineers for decades, constantly requiring road closures after storms and seismic events. The new Tom Lantos Tunnels, named for the late Congressman, allow residents and commuters to bypass Devil's Slide. The northbound and southbound tunnels now provide a much-needed safe and efficient highway between Pacifica and Montara. The tunnels were opened to vehicles on March 26, 2013.

The tunnels contain two single 12-foot lanes of traffic going both ways, each about 4,000 feet long. SC Solutions performed seismic analysis of the Devil’s Slide Tunnel section to evaluate vulnerabilities of the concrete structure during the design seismic event. Excavation analysis was also conducted to validate the design construction sequence process. The work performed by SC Solutions helps ensure that the tunnels will be safe from seismic activity, rockslides and other events for decades to come.

The Foresthill Bridge is the primary link between the towns of Auburn and Foresthill, California. It rises 700 feet over the American River Canyon. The bridge, which opened in 1973, had significant deficiencies that made it vulnerable to earthquakes. SC Solutions was commissioned to evaluate the seismic vulnerability of the bridge.

Engineers Hassan Sedarat, Wei Li and Joyce Lee, and Project Manager Vince Jacob led the project by performing a non-linear time history analysis of a detailed 3-D model of the bridge, which can simulate the buckling of the superstructure elements. The retrofit is scheduled to be completed in Spring 2014 after more than 2.3 million pounds of structural steel are added throughout the 2,428-foot span.
