The members of Memphis Roller Derby are no strangers to collisions on the track. Yet on Tuesday, March 4th, they will collide with the world of film and music as the group teams up with the On Location: MEMPHIS International Film & Music Fest to screen Derby, Baby! on Beale Street.

The film screening takes place at Blues City Café’s Band Box at 7 p.m. Attendees will have the chance to mingle with Memphis Roller Derby players and OL:M staff, as well as learn more about each organization. The film itself examines roller derby history, explores its cultural ramifications, and features interviews with both legendary figures and today’s rock stars of the sport.

“Derby, Baby! tells an accurate and really interesting story of what we do in derby and the athleticism the sport requires,” said Francine Kivlehan, a player for Memphis Roller Derby who skates as “Franny Pack” and is head of business and finance for the organization. “We’re a tight-knit group that brings together all different types of women, and the film gives Memphians an inside look into our world.”

Memphis Roller Derby plays seven bouts a year at the Mid-South Fairgrounds Pipkin Building. Anyone can join, whether they are interested in playing or officiating. The women who are currently a part of Memphis Roller Derby will teach newcomers everything they need to know.

Meanwhile, On Location: MEMPHIS’ 15th edition is scheduled for April 24-27. Films will primarily be screened at Malco Studio on the Square, while music showcases and panels will take place at a variety of prominent Midtown locations.

Tickets for the Derby, Baby! screening are just $10 and are available at the door or on the On Location: MEMPHIS website.
