SGS INTRON was awarded a contract to develop an ultra-quiet road surface in the Netherlands.
Online PR News – 18-February-2014 – 18.02.2014 – As one of the four chosen companies in road construction services, SGS INTRON has been selected by Rijkswaterstaat of the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment to develop an ultra-quiet road surface. Started on 20 January 2014, this innovative, four-phase project is scheduled to be completed with an implementable ultra-quiet road surface in 2016.
Rijkswaterstaat, part of the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment, is responsible for the design, construction, management and maintenance of the main infrastructure facilities in the Netherlands. These elements include the main road and waterway networks as well as the principal water systems.
SGS INTRON & PERSISSST
One of four road construction (http://www.sgs.com/en/Construction/Services-Related-to-Materials/Road-Construction-Services.aspx) market leaders participating in the first phase of this innovative project to develop a quiet road surface, SGS INTRON boasts six years of experience in modeling mechanical and acoustic road surface properties and testing products. This extensive experience has resulted in SGS INTRON being part of the first phase of PERSISSST; the development of a prototype for an ultra-quiet road surface. With a life span of at least 7 years, this new poroelastic road surface (P.E.R.S.) will lower noise levels by 10 decibels reducing the need for expensive noise abatement measures such as sound barriers, sunken roads and road canopies.

Services for road construction include assessment and improvement of asphalt properties, the determination of asphalt component quality and suitability, calculations of the CO2 footprints of semi-heated asphalts and the assessment of damage to overheated asphalt. SGS INTRON tests bitumen, including composition PAH and rheology/viscosity in state-of-the-art laboratories. Expansion joints are assessed and tested and service life predictions are made. SGS INTRON road construction experts determine the maintenance condition of existing roads, draw up subsequent plans for maintenance and repair, control road mixture designs and audit and inspect the application of road products. SGS INTRON is deeply involved in the development of new road products including rollpave and road materials.
