Key West proves yet again on the Fourth, that this is one of the coolest places on earth for a great vacation, and the surge in visitor bookings for the event proved it.
Online PR News – 12-July-2010 – – Fourth of July is a big event every year in Key West, but this year some headed for Duval Street for a new way of showing love for the good ol' USA. Women protested for their right to walk topless by doing just that down Key West's main tourism area, Duval Street Key West. The protest march took place on the Fourth of July, and visitors in town were able to experience some of the whacky fun this town has been known to produce.
The women, who are Naturists, claim that going topless is a right guaranteed by the constitution under the First Amendment. This amendment grants freedom of expression to all citizens of the United States of America, whose birthday was celebrated across the country on July fourth.
The women are from the naturist group Florida Keys Free Beaches. They believe women should have the same rights as men, which includes going topless on the beach. But they want to go topless other places as well, which is where controversy comes in play. They want to walk down the street topless, ride bicycles, and more sans shirt. They chose Duval Street Key West on the Fourth of July for their protest march.
For the naturists, this Fourth of July protest is about gender equality, not exhibitionism. A sympathetic woman who wished to remain anonymous but who plans to take part in the march claimed, "Women want the same rights as men, and we're going to demonstrate this by exercising our rights on the Fourth of July." said a woman, interviewed before the big day.
"If men can do it, why can't women?" asks Sheila McCourtney, on vacation to Key West recently. When asked whether she'd like to go topless on Duval Street, she laughingly said, "I don't think that would be good for me!" But she supports the cause, stating that women should be able to do whatever men do, including baring their upper bodies in public.
Duval Street is the hub of entertainment and tourism activity in Key West, and the most frequently visited area of Old Town, especially for cruise ship visitors. Most of the Key West bars are located on Duval Street, as well as restaurants, shopping, and galleries. It's also the center for celebrations like Fantasy Fest, street fairs, parades, Hemingway Days bull rides, Gay Pride march, and more. The famed Duval Crawl refers to the abundance of bars, so many that patrons can go from bar to bar on foot and visit a different bar every hour of the day. Duval Street bars range from elegant to gritty, so there's something for everyone. Most visitors plan on water sports or snorkeling in the morning, with a walk down Duval Street in the afternoon or evening. It's the perfect way to experience Key West.
It's amidst all this that the Naturists held their topless march this Fourth of July. The national holiday is always exciting in Key West, with fireworks and entertainment, but this year was hotter than ever.
