It is the first Cath lab in the city dedicated to emergency treatment for heart attacks. Fortis Cunningham Road witnesses an increasing number of heart attacks every day. • 1st 60 minutes in a Heart Attack is “Golden Hour”
• Key to survival is Emergency Angioplasty
• Dedicated Cath lab for emergency treatment during heart attacks can save many lives in the city
The opening of the new, dedicated Cath lab is aimed at further strengthening the Fortis’ ‘Attack the Attack’ heart attack awareness initiative, launched a few months ago. “The second Fortis Cath lab on Cunningham Road is an important milestone in the evolution of the hospital as a single-window destination for immediate treatment for heart attacks. The first 60 minutes, also called the ‘golden hour’- is a very critical phase in the life of a person who has just suffered a heart attack. The Cath lab seeks to fulfill an important life-saving mission for such critical patients. Emergency angioplasty has come to be recognized as the golden rule for the treatment of any heart-attack patients. Treatment in the “golden hour” is a guarantee for a total restoration of the damaged heart,” says Dr Vivek Jawali, Chief Cardio Thoracic Surgeon at Fortis Hospitals.

“With the increase in the number of heart attacks among a large section of society, a specified Cath lab will certainly help patients during emergency. I am very happy to hear that Fortis hospital is taking interest in growing emergency care. The city of Bangalore requires such critical care labs which can save valuable lives,” says Shri Raghavendra H Auradkar, Commissioner of Police.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Keshava R, Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at Fortis Hospitals Cunningham Road, said: “It is the best facility in the centre in CBD region. Emergency patients will not be delayed and will be ensured of the best emergency care which is crucial to saving more lives. Primary Angioplasty saves life and we will be able to reduce the door to balloon time from current 55 to 60 mins by another 15 mins which will help in saving the life further”.

“The Cath lab makes use of the latest advanced technology and hospital also has intra vascular ultra sound system which does imaging inside the coronary artery. This is a vital tool in carrying out complex angioplasty and optimizing angioplasty results,” adds Dr Keshava.

A Cath lab is an examination room in a hospital or clinic that uses diagnostic imaging equipment to visualize the arteries of the heart and the chambers of the heart and treat any stenosis or abnormality. The opening of the Cath lab assumes significance in view of the increasing need of angiography/percutaneous techniques like coronary angioplasty (ballooning) in any cardiac unit.
