Online PR News – 08-July-2010 – – J D Smith joins with major art museums in celebrating the work of Impressionist era artist James Tissot. J D Smith Fine Art has recently added a wonderful 1886 mezzotint to its collection of Tissot’s etchings.

French Impressionism exhibits draw large crowds of art enthusiasts whenever they occur. The major exhibit of the season is the Impressionist exhibit at the de Young Museum in San Francisco, California (it opened in May and runs through early September). The de Young’s exhibit includes some of the most important Impressionist works in the world, on loan from the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, France. The exhibit includes works by Monet, Renoir, and James Tissot.

Tissot’s art is also highlighted in an exhibit at the Brigham Young University Museum of Art. The BYU Museum of Art is showing 124 watercolor paintings by Tissot. These works are drawn from his later period, where he focused on religious themes.

The recent James Tissot addition to the collection of J D Smith Fine Art is from his early period, where he portrayed the charms of women of the time, particularly the women of Paris. The work is a mezzotint on chine collé titled Le Matin (In the Morning). It shows a maid arriving with a tray containing the morning meal. Tissot made the most of mezzotint’s ability to contrast light and dark, successfully having the woman emerge from the darker background.

While they are best known for their colorful paintings, the Impressionists also produced graphic works, including etchings, lithographs, and woodblock prints. In contrast to his oil paintings, which can sell for high-dollar figures, works on paper by Tissot (and the other Impressionist era artists) are so reasonable they can be purchased by almost any collector. This new Tissot work, now on view at J D Smith Fine Art, complements the gallery’s existing Impressionist-era prints by Tissot, Mary Cassatt, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.

J D Smith Fine Art is an Internet-based art gallery specializing in fine art prints by well-known artists of the 19th and 20th centuries. J D Smith Fine Art is located just outside Portland, Oregon, in the community of Happy Valley.
