Dubai's Bid for Expo 2020
Dubai's ambitious theme for their Expo bid is "Connecting Minds, Creating The Future". The event is proposed to take place at Dubai Trade Center, a new 438 hectare site in the Jebel Ali area.
Dubai's bid covers 3 key themes: Sustainability, Mobility and Opportunity.
The World's Fair - an international event
Expo is short for "exposition" and refers to the World's Fair, an opportunity for cities to display excellence and innovations to the rest of the world over a period of 6 weeks to 6 months.
World Expos are a key meeting point for the global community to share innovations and make progress on issues of international importance such as the global economy, sustainable development and improved quality of life for the world’s population.
Every five years, World Expos attract millions of visitors who explore and discover pavilions, exhibitions and cultural events staged by hundreds of participants including nations, international organisations and businesses.
A great opportunity for Dubai
With Dubai now the official host for the event, the UAE stands to benefit greatly from the worldwide exposure and resultant changes to infrastructure in the region.
It is predicted that 25 million visitors would be attracted to the Expo, with over 70% of the visitors coming from outside the UAE and over 277,000 jobs forecasted to be created as a result. (7 Days, 2013).
The legacy of Expo 2020 would create many benefits for those living in the Emirate, as well as improving the environmental footprint of the region; with many innovative businesses created, improved transport services available and new sources of sustainability in energy and water developed.
