Atlantic Medical Group is the only clinic in Jacksonville and Kinston area that can use the Smart Pill gastrointestinal motility testing, a system that can assess complex or unexplained GI disorders without the discomfort and radiation exposure to patients.
Online PR News – 27-November-2013 – Jacksonville,North Carolina – Atlantic Medical Group PC today announced the availability of a new specialty procedure to assess complex or unexplained digestive disorders such as delayed gastric emptying and chronic constipation. Atlantic Medical Group PC is the only healtthcare provider in the Jacksonville area (also in Kinston) to offer the SmartPill motility monitoring system, a motility capsule that offers a unique way to assess motility by collecting and analyzing data from within the entire GI tract via a test that can be performed in the clinic or physician's office. The test is ambulatory, allowing the patient to go about their normal routine throughout the test, and it eliminates dependency on radiologic tests.
SmartPill can be utilized to evaluate patients who are having unexplained digestive symptoms, such as nausea, bloating, constipation, abdominal pain and vomiting--symptoms that are common in the general population, with a reported prevalence of 25-40%. These symptoms account for up to 40% of GI office consultations. The SmartPill procedure measures pressure, pH and temperature to determine transit times, which is the time it takes food to move through specific regions of the GI tract and the overall amount of time it takes to move food through the entire GI tract.
“This technology is one of the most advanced methods to assess the entire GI tract and provides new diagnostic information in many patients,” said Dr.Eric Ibegbu, President and Medical Director of Atlantic Medical Group PC and ESI Medical Research, PLLC. With SmartPill, physicians can better treat patients with overlapping or unexplained symptoms, leading to changes in patient management.”
The SmartPill motility monitoring system offers several clinical benefits. It eliminates the need for segmental transit studies and offers increased sensitivity compared to gastric emptying scintigraphy(GES), radiopaque markers (ROM) and whole gut scintigraphy. In addition, the SmartPill procedure localizes disease to specific regions of the GI tract in the presence of overlapping motility symptoms and standardizes the motility testing process with benchmarked results.
The SmartPill motility monitoring system also offers added patient benefits such as improved comfort compared to other existing motility tests, eliminating radiation exposure, minimizing patient down-time and, ultimately, by improving patient symptoms through providing direction for therapy.

About SmartPill Motility Monitoring System
The SmartPill motility monitoring system offers a unique way to assess motility by collecting and analyzing data from within the entire GI tract via a test that can be performed in the clinic or physician's office. The test is ambulatory, allowing the patient to go about their normal routine throughout the test. As the SmartPill capsule passes through the GI tract, it transmits data to a recorder worn by the patient. Once the single-use capsule has passed from the body, study data are downloaded from the recorder to a computer. The physician then uses MotiliGI® software to display and analyze the data, providing test results in both graphical and report formats. Results are used for the evaluation of gastroparesis and chronic constipation. The SmartPill motility monitoring system was granted initial 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in July 2006.
