Online PR News – 26-June-2010 – – Fishkill – More than 40 Newburgh Free Academy students marked the completion of their Certified Nursing Assistant internships recently during a touching ceremony at Elant at Fishkill Nursing Home & Rehabilitation Center.

The students began their experience at Elant at Fishkill in October, spending two days a week (for a total of 108 hours), with residents and staff as they learned the skill that are critical when caring for others as CNAs. Most of their time was spent caring for those in Elant at Fishkill’s Dementia Unit.

“These kids really amazed us with their compassion and care toward the residents,” said George Michaels, vice president and executive director at Elant at Fishkill. “Dementia in the elderly is often devastating and can be extremely difficult to handle as caregivers. But these students not only contributed their time, they also contributed their hearts. In fact, two have already come back to volunteer here.”

The official pinning ceremony was hosted at the Elant at Fishkill campus so that residents who had played such a predominant role in the lives of the students over the past several months could share in the joy of accomplishment. To help honor the students, residents presented each one with a rose after the pinning was complete.

“Each day you walked in here and brought something to the lives of the residents,” said Newburgh Free Academy Instructor Linda Romano.

“We wish them all the best of luck,” Michaels said. “I think it may have been as rewarding for us as it was for them. It was a very positive experience all around.”
