Master photographers Lisa Kristine, Arno Rafael Minkkinen, Victor Skrebneski, Benedikt Taschen, John H. White and Li Zhensheng will join the honourees list for their contributions to photography at the 11th Annual Lucie awards, 2013.

In addition to celebrating the other 5 honorees, the Lucies are spotlighting the life and work of Li Zhensheng by giving him the Lucie Award for Achievement in Documentary Photography. Chen Danqing, world famous Chinese artist, will present this award. Since the Lucies were created to educate and raise awareness of those photographers who may be well known in other countries but not as much in the US, The Lucies are proud to be bestowing this honor.
Li Zhensheng was born in 1940 in Dalian, Liaoning Province, People’s Republic of China. After early studies in cinematography at Changchun, Jilin, he began working as a photographer for the Heilongjiang Daily in northeastern China, where he stayed for over nineteen years before starting a teaching career at the International Political Science Institute of the University of Beijing.
His 2003 chronicle of the turmoil of the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976) Red-Color News Soldier: A Chinese Photographer’s Odyssey Through the Cultural Revolution (Phaidon 2003), has been translated into six languages and received the Overseas Press Club of America’s Olivier Rebbot Award for Best Photographic Reporting from Abroad. An exhibition of his images from the Cultural Revolution has appeared in nearly every major European capital and continues to travel around the world.
His collection has been represented worldwide by Contact Press Images since 1999. He is based in Beijing, China and New York, USA.
The Lucie Awards are a celebration of photography’s greatest achievements the world over and this year caps Fall Photo Week. The Lucie Foundation and the global photography community will recognize this year’s extraordinary honorees and the talented winners from the 2013 International Photography Awards (IPA) juried competition - the Foundation’s sister-effort. Awards presented will include: Lucie Honorees, IPA prizes, Support Category Awards, and the APA/Lucie Foundation Scholarship Prize in the amount of $5,000 to a professional to further advance a personal project.
Winners of the International Photography Awards (IPA) will receive recognition at the 11th Annual Lucie Awards, and a Lucie statue, and cash prizes. The IPA will give $22,500 in cash prizes to winners of its annual competition including $10,000 for the International Photographer of the Year Award provided by AtEdge, $5,000 prize for the Discovery of the Year Award, and $5,000 to the Deeper Perspective Photographer of the Year, provided by ASMP, in addition to the new Moving Images Photographer of the Year $2,500 award. Winning work will also be displayed in the annual Best of Show exhibition, which will debut during the Lucie Weekend, and then travel internationally.

The Lucie Awards are the culmination of a weekend of events leading up to the big night including the IPA’s Best of Show exhibition and party and the Lucie Lectures. The Lucie Awards are presented in partnership with PDN, Splashlight, AtEdge, Phase One, APA and ASMP.
Support Category nominees will be announced shortly. The Lucies will recognize those in the creative community who are integral in crafting an image in the following categories: Print Advertising Campaign of the Year, Fashion Layout of the Year, Photography Magazine of the Year, Book Publisher of the Year, Exhibition/Curator of the Year and Picture Editor of the Year.
A Special Tribute to photographers who have passed away in late 2012 and 2013 will be showcased along with video compilations.
The Lucie Awards, produced by the Lucie Foundation (a non-profit charitable foundation), honor the achievements of the world’s most accomplished photographers, discover and cultivate emerging talent through mentoring and scholarship programs, and promote the appreciation of photography worldwide.
