Online PR News – 09-September-2013 – Durango, Colorado – A woman who donated a kidney to her husband in 2012 is launching a nonprofit called Rock 1 Kidney. The organization’s website (www.rock1kidney.org) features stories of ways kidney donors are “rocking one kidney” post-donation to encourage others to consider doing the same.

“When I was approved as Bryan’s kidney donor, I was surprised by how much fear I encountered from friends and family members. They thought it might be dangerous, or impact my lifestyle,” said Jen Reeder, founder of Rock 1 Kidney. “I’m hoping Rock 1 Kidney can dispel some of the fear potential kidney donors or their loved ones might have by showing you can absolutely have a healthy, fun life after donating a kidney.”

Reeder said she is deeply concerned by the number of people who die each year waiting for a kidney, or who have to endure the rigors of dialysis while waiting. According to the National Kidney Foundation, 4,903 Americans died in 2012 while waiting for a kidney transplant, and nearly 3,000 Americans are added to the kidney waitlist each month. As of June 21, 2013, there were 96,645 people waiting for kidney transplants in the U.S.

“It’s a wonderful trick of evolution that we only need one kidney but are usually born with two,” Reeder said. “I’ve never met a kidney donor who has regretted the decision to donate. It’s incredibly rewarding to give the gift of life to someone. And I still do everything I love: camping, hiking, traveling, goofing around with my dog – life is good!”

The goal of Rock 1 Kidney, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is to make living kidney donation so accepted and common that no one dies waiting for a kidney transplant. It is entirely run by volunteers. The website was donated by Madwire Media (http://www.madwirewebdesign.com/).
