Marci Walker, owner of Madam Walker’s Braidery and School and Founder of the S.E.L.F. Image Awards Foundation will be hosting the 4th Biannual S.E.L.F. Image Awards/Benefit on October 19, 2013 from 7 to 11 pm at the Prince George’s County Ballroom

Online PR News – 06-September-2013 – PG County, Maryland – This black tie, red carpet fundraising event, will include dinner and entertainment. Glynn Jackson, Founder of the Golden Scissor Awards and 2009 S.E.L.F. Image Awards winner will be the MC for the event. Speakers and special guest include Author and Domestic Violence advocate Angela Davis, Spoken Word Artist/Actress Dyone Mitchell and Washington DC’s own songstress Tanya Blount.

The S.E.L.F. Image Awards Foundation’s mission is to bring attention to and raise funds for the safety, protection and advocacy for families in crisis. The S.E.L.F. Image Awards also honors entrepreneurs within the natural hair industry who have given training, employment and encouragement to thousands of men and women throughout the country.

Starting with its inaugural event in 2009, the hair industry leaders honored at the event have all had to deal with individual challenges, and violence in their own ways. Some have mentored the abused as well as abusers. Some have provided safe houses for the victims. Still others offer a means of empowerment through training and employment.

Mrs. Rene Storr, who will be receiving The S.E.L.F. Image Awards 2013 Life Time Achievement Award. Storr is a 20 year successful, hair Salon owner has been an organizer for over 30 years, feeding the hungry, housing the homeless, offering shelter and mentorship to dozens of families and women in crisis.

She is the owner of Rene's Beauty Solon since 1993. Mrs. Storr is one of our 'unsung Sheroes' who has opened her own home to give abused women a safe space, food, encouragement and LOVE

Rev. Mary L. Wilson will be one of this year’s S.E.L.F. Image Awards 2013 Grant Award Recipient. She has served for the last 25 years as the Executive Director of the Harambee House for Youth, an Africentric residential facility for court adjudicated juveniles. Reverend Wilson is a visionary leader and a tireless advocate for women, young adults the poor, the oppressed and children.

Mrs. Carolyn White-Washington will as be receiving The S.E.L.F. Image Awards 2013 Grant Award. She is the Founder of Sisters4Sister and believes that the empowerment of women and girls is achieved through enlightening workshops on personal and professional development along with engaging community outreach in the areas such as HIV-AIDS Awareness, Domestic Violence, Homelessness and youth mentorship.

The S.E.L.F. Image Awards is one of several events sponsored by the foundation throughout the year. Throughout 2014, the S.E.L.F. Image Awards Foundation has created charitable means by which it contributes to its mission of community awareness and advocacy.

The mission is to have Black people of African descent love themselves and each other by embracing our own unique, God Given, beauty in mind, body and spirit . To educate and increase awareness to Domestic Violence in our homes, schools, churches, communities and cities with education, support, advocacy & raising funds to support our educational scholarships for women affected by domestic violence.

To recognize and honor Icons in the Natural Hair Care Industry, whom have given training, employment, support and empowerment to men and women. Our goal is to support facilities that provide referral for services, shelter, training, therapy and care to those who are in crisis, affected by Domestic Violence.

Therefore on October 19th, 2013 we will come together, once again, as family to break bread, be entertained, network and present the coveted MOTT Award statue. The S.E.L.F. Image Awards Board of Directors fully embraces this opportunity to pay forward our many blessings.
