Absolute K9 sponsored the annual Lowes Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog Competition which took place on May 22, 2010. Over 2,000 spectators enjoyed watching 65 surf dogs take to the waves in 3 heats competing for a spectacular pet vacation and bragging rights.
Online PR News – 16-June-2010 – – CORONADO, California - Absolute K9, San Diego’s premier dog training organization, is honored to have sponsored this year’s Lowes Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog Competition. This year the canine surfing competition, which has been drawing huge crowds annually for the past five years, benefited the San Diego Police Department’s Canine Unit.
Over 2,000 human spectators from near and far, 65 competing canines, and even some famous actors premiering in the new dog movie Marmaduke attended this year’s event, held on Saturday May 22nd. Comedian-actors Owen Wilson, George Lopez, and even Marmaduke himself (a giant Great Dane named George) showed up to support this exciting event.
This grand affair was broken down into three competitions: small dogs, big dogs, and dogs surfing tandem-style with their owners. Some of the 65 competing dogs were surfing for the first time this Saturday, while others were more seasoned surfers who have previously competed.
Each of the competing canines had 10 minutes to catch at least two waves. They were judged on their level of confidence, the length of their ride, and their overall ability to 'grip it and rip it.'
According to the Dog Surf Competition’s organizers, the smallest dog to hit the waves this year was a five-pound Pomeranian named Bobby Gorgeous, who hails from the capital of big waves, Hawaii. The biggest dog to try his paws at surfing this contest was Nani, an 85-pound Bernese Mountain dog from Carmel Valley.
In the first heat, an Australian kelpie named Abbie won the small dog division competition, with Toby and Shih Tzu and Torri a Nova Scotia Duck Trolling Retriever, in second and third, respectively.
In heat two, Stanley, a Chesapeake Bay retriever, took home the gold, with Nani, the aforementioned Bernese Mountain dog, and Kalani, a Golden Retriever, taking silver and bronze.
In the last heat, where dogs and their humans took to the waves, a Golden Retriever duo took first, Jack Russell terrier Buddy and his human dad took second, and Pudge, an English Bulldog, and his dad took third.
Besides exclusive bragging rights at the neighborhood dog park, these winners scored the ultimate pet vacation at Loews Coronado Bay Resort, who also sponsors the event as part of their Lowes Loves Pets Program. Absolute K9 partnered with Lowes to make this year’s event possible, contributing to the $45,000 this fundraiser has earned since 2005.
