The New York Landmarks Conservancy has announced 23 Sacred Sites Grants totaling $275,000 awarded to historic religious properties throughout New York State including $5,000 to Universal Baptist Church – Universal Preservation Hall in Saratoga Springs, New York.

“It’s vital to renew and repair religious buildings,” said Peg Breen, President of The New York Landmarks Conservancy. “Not only do these sites convey their communities’ history, they serve their neighborhoods today with food pantries, nursery schools, concerts and a variety of worthy programs.”

Completed in 1871 to the design of Bovden and Son architects, the Universal Preservation Hall is an excellent example of the High Victorian Gothic style. The church was originally built for a Methodist congregation, the Episcopal Methodist Church of Saratoga Springs, and the brick building has contrasting sandstone. In 2000, in the face of overwhelming deferred maintenance including roof truss failure, the church was condemned and the nonprofit Universal Preservation Hall was launched. The building was opened as an event and conference space, with the church still worshipping in a ground floor chapel and retaining seats on the non-profit board.

The building contains a wonderful chapel space used by Universal Baptist Church but available for rental usage. The Universal Preservation Hall occupies the balance of the building with a resident modern dance company and dance lessons, and hosts performing arts programming, weddings, concerts, dances and other events. A proposed partnership with Proctors, a Schenectady performing arts and cultural venue, will increase the building’s reach into the Saratoga Springs community with additional programming. Universal Preservation Hall is located at 25 Washington Street in historic downtown Saratoga Springs.
