Rise of the Underdog: Chicago based singer-songwriter Phil Jacobson wins the Elbo Room Battle of the Bands competition and secures a slot on the main stage for I Am Fest 2013 at the House of Blues

Online PR News – 02-August-2013 – Chicago, IL – Singer/songwriter Phil Jacobson took first place this past weekend at the 2013 Elbo Room Battle of the Bands for I AM FEST, claiming a main stage slot at the House of Blues on August 24. Jacobson and his band managed to beat out over 120 other groups during the two-month competition despite being defeated in the 3rd round. Thanks to his online fans, Phil and his band secured the majority of online votes and returned to the competition as the Wild Card in the semi-finals, nabbing 3rd place and another shot at the finals. "I really wanted it," says Jacobson. "I wasn’t going to go out without giving it all I had.”

The final round of competition took place on July 27th to a packed house at the Elbo Room in Chicago. Phil and his band, consisting of members Dave Brandwein (drums), Chris James (guitar), Nick Fane (bass), Mark Jacobson and Andrew Demuro (vocals), played an electric set of original pop-rock, blues and country influenced tunes. Other bands on the bill included Pirates!!! (3rd Place), Rory Tyer Band (2nd Place), Upsin Hounds and Time Crash.

Phil Jacobson is an unsigned pop-rock guitarist and vocalist hailing from Buffalo Grove, IL, a suburban area north of the city. He’s seen many acts grace the House of Blues stage and now he will be one of them. “I couldn’t be more ecstatic! I would have been content to just play the show. Winning was a total surprise,” Phil said.

More about I AM FEST: The original Independent Art and Music Festival aka I AM FEST took place in 2009. Chicago Noise Machine, a partnership of nine local Chicago rock bands, hosted the DIY festival at the Congress Theater involving 25 local bands playing on two stages.
“Most festivals in Chicago are put on by large-scale production companies such as C3 or Jam productions. These are huge corporations that have the manpower and money to put on massive, successful, wonderful events, yet sometimes balk at the DIY ethics that are a staple in the modern music industry. I AM FEST is filling that void!” -Luis Rodriguez, Gapers Block
In 2010, Brian Bender, a former member of the Chicago Noise Machine, chose to take on the project for it’s second year. He narrowed down the roster to ten bands; eight established and talented Mid-West bands along with two winners of the I AM FEST Battle of the Bands hosted at the Elbo Room. The festival was held at the House of Blues and included performances by Mason’s Case, Ryan Powers, Laser Love, The Flavor Savers, Jack in Space, Bambi Raptor, Kelsey Montanez, Digital Mindy, The Alaya Conscious, and The Bob Clymers. Local Chicago artists occupied the lobby and sold their work to attendees, and some band members even donned body paint creations by the artists for their set.
Previous Battle of the Bands winners includes: The Giving Moon (2012), The Studs (2012), Board of Governors (2011), Sunshine and The Feel Good Nation (2011), Alaya (2010), The Bob Clymers (2010), Phat Cats (2009) and Red City (2009)
