Angelelli nails the Rolex Sports Car Series for the 15th time

Max Angelelli records his career’s 15th win at the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series Written By John Lavitt

Online PR News – 08-June-2010 – – The duo of veteran Max Angelelli and rookie co-driver Ricky Taylor, recorded their first Grand-AM Rolex Sports Car victory at Monday’s Memorial Day Classic, at Lime Rock Park at Lakeville, Conn. The couple successfully navigated the tricky seven-turn road circuit to give the seasoned pro his 15th career Roles Series victory.

The racers found the competition tough because of the tortuous seven turn layouts, but also because of the heat sapping temperature, that made racing all the more difficult. The duo successfully negotiated the seven turn layout and the slower GT cars to advance through the pack on three separate occasions. The Sun Trust car maintained the pole position for 95 laps out of the 175 laps, thanks mainly to their rock solid strategy.

The No. 10 Sun Trust Ford Dallara of Wayne Taylor racing, finished the race ahead of runners up No. 8 Starworks Motorsports BMW Riley of Mike Forest and Ryan Dalziel. According to an exhausted Angelelli, the result was mainly due to technical inputs from Simon Hodgson, general manager and Travis Jacobson, technical director. Angelelli stated in an interview that he was happy for Ricky, who had missed out on a podium finish earlier because of the crash at Barber.

Taylor, co-driver, said that he was not surprised with the result. According to him, the SunTrust car that was given to them was a winner from the very beginning and all they had to do was refrain from making mistakes. Taylor started the day by finishing third in the qualifying round. However, he was awarded the outside-front-row starting spot, after No. 90 Spirit of Daytona Racing Porsche Coyote of Antonio Garcia and Buddy Rice was disqualified on technical grounds. Taylor was able to slip past the pole sitting Nic Jonsson on the 21st Lap as the leader was trying to navigate through slow moving GT-class cars. He was able to hold on to this position till the 43- minute mark for fuel, tires and driver changes.

The tricky race track accounted for the championship leader, Rojas in the very first lap as he was not able to negotiate the sweeping right-hand turn one and was forced off-course into the soft dirt. The car suffered damages to the front-mounted radiator that was ripped right off the car, making it unsuitable for racing.

Angelelli took over from where Taylor left at the 43-minute mark, 45 laps into the race. Seventeen laps later he broke into the top five positions after overtaking Terry Borcheller driving the No. 9 Action Express Porsche Riley. Later, on the 72nd lap he passed Brain Frisselle in the No. 6 Michael Shank Racing Ford Riley. The sequence of pit stops enabled him to get back the pole position, which he retained till the 99th lap, when the Sun Trust Team called him back for the final pit stop. Anegelelli resumed at 9th position after, but gradually clawed back to second position, behind Joao Barbosa. With forty minutes remaining, he was able to overtake him after the lap-123 restart. Victory was achieved after two more restarts and a dogged attempt by No.60 Michel Shank Racing Ford Riley of Oswaldo Negri to upstage him at the Rolex Sports Car Grand-AM

The win propelled the Sun Trust team to second position, trailing the championship leader by 21 points in the Grand-AM Rolex Sports car event.
