Bonnen's technical background includes a Bachelor of Science degree from Michigan State University and Master of Science degree from the University of Minnesota (Plant Physiology). She earned her Doctor of Philosophy degree in Plant Pathology from Michigan State University, with doctoral research focused on mechanisms of disease resistance in Curcurbitaceae. Bonnen received her Juris Doctorate from Wake Forest University; is a member of the North Carolina Bar; and is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

With a practice centering on electronics, software and communications technologies, Mitch Bigel has been practicing patent law since 1982, including experience as a patent agent, corporate patent attorney and intellectual property law counsel for IBM Corporation.
