This week marks the one year anniversary of the sinking of Key West diving's most prized dive site, the USS Vandenberg shipwreck; the wreck remains the most popular Key West diving destination
Online PR News – 26-May-2010 – – May 27th, 2010 marks the one-year anniversary of the biggest event in recent Key West diving history, the sinking of the massive USS Vandenberg. While it took several years for the sinking to actually take place, on May 27th of last year, Key West residents and visitors came out to sea by the dozens to watch the momentous event take place right before their eyes. The Vandenberg quickly became the biggest Key West scuba diving attraction, as well as claiming a spot in the top 10 list of the world's largest shipwreck dive sites.
Since its sinking, hundreds and even thousands of eager divers have flocked to the southernmost island of Key West to get a spot on the Vandenberg Key West diving morning excursions. Due to the popularity of the Vandenberg dives, the Key West Dive Center even started offering double-Vandenberg dives, a 3.5-hour journey departing at 8:30AM with two dives at the massive Vandenberg.
Diving the Vandenberg is truly one of the most unique diving Key West experiences. It is considered an advanced dive, with the boat resting in 120 feet of water and its superstructure reaching to 60 feet of water. Divers with anything less than an Advanced Open Water certification must dive the Vandenberg along with an expert dive guide.
The Key West Dive Center is excited to commemorate the ship's one-year sinking, which takes place on the Thursday right before one of the busiest weekends of the year, Memoraial Day Weekend.
"The Vandenberg sinking was probably the biggest thing to ever happen to the world of Key West scuba diving," says Key West Dive Center reservations agent Kelly Rubio. "It's sure to keep attracting a lot of attention and a lot of curious divers from all over the world for many years to come."
The Key West Dive Center is the leading center for reservations and information on a variety of Key West scuba diving excursions including the morning Vandenberg trips, afternoon dual-reef dives, dive-in-a-day courses, and certification courses. The center also offers other great water trips including Key West snorkeling, mini-submarine adventures and snorkel/dolphin combo trips.
