Dynamic tool also focuses on individual teams and reveals patterns from 2001 to 2012.
Online PR News – 09-May-2013 – Edmonton, AB – Does payroll matter in the NHL? Is there a correlation between Penalty Minutes and becoming a Stanley Cup champion? How does the Detroit Red Wings, or any given team, compare with other teams for shots on goal over the past 11 seasons? It was with these and other questions in mind that Darkhorse Analytics built the publicly available interactive visualization at http://hockeyimpact.darkhorseanalytics.com/.
“As fans of hockey and data analysis, this was an obvious choice for an internal project,” said Dan Haight, president of Darkhorse Analytics. “We wanted to make an interactive that allows us and fellow fans to explore the data, answer questions and easily communicate the insights usually locked away in standard tables full of stats.”
Hockey and data visualization fans can choose to select team rankings based on payroll, goals scored, and other stats like road attendance. The current tool also highlights a few stories in the data, such as the 2007 Anaheim Ducks’ Stanley Cup victory despite leading the league in penalty minutes during the regular season, a striking occurrence given the low penalty times of other champions.
