Deer Antler Spray Wins WADA Doping Ban Lift, Loses Efficacy Test

Research studies show all-natural powder capsules are more potent than spray extract, helping athletes run faster and increase muscle recovery time

Online PR News – 08-May-2013 – POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – Whether you are a weekend warrior or a world-class athlete looking for an edge to enhance performance, increase energy or improve muscle strength, deer antler velvet is a legal, steroid alternative supplement that deserves a second look. However, some deer velvet forms test more effectively than others.

University and industry clinical studies have shown that deer antler velvet, in its powder form, provides a host of health benefits for its users. What people may not know is that naturally occurring deer antler velvet powder easily outperforms synthetically altered sprays.

This week, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) dropped deer antler velvet from its list of banned substances after admitting the supplement, which has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for 2,000 years, had most likely been wrongly accused.
In the past, deer antler velvet appeared in the news any time a pro athlete used it to recover faster from an injury or increase muscle strength. Deer antler velvet is linked to the speedy recovery of Super Bowl champion Ray Lewis and former world #1 golfer, Vijay Singh.

Deer antler velvet contains naturally-occurring IGF-I (insulin growth factor) a hormone similar to insulin and affects growth. IGF-1 substance is on the banned list of many professional sports leagues. However, the WADA has ruled the amount of natural occurring IGF-I in deer antler velvet does not warrant banishment. Vijay Singh, who admitted he used deer antler velvet for improvement in his body and in his game, was cleared of any wrongdoing by the PGA Tour.
The WADA ruling is a relief for everyday athletes and bodybuilders that like to be sure they play by the rules. Deer antler velvet comes in two common forms, spray and capsules (powder).

“All natural red deer antler velvet contains more than 300 active ingredients that work together to boost the body’s performance,’’ said Ted Alflen, President of TCCD International, which distributes the patented BuckPower deer antler velvet in the US. “Unlike pure capsules, watered-down spray is altered from its natural state. The science shows powder is simply more effective in helping the body benefit from deer antler velvet’s synergistic complex of nutrients.”
There are also studies that support that deer antler velvet is beneficial to athletes.

Powder forms of deer antler velvet help muscle recovery

In a study conducted by the University of Otago, 30 individuals tested their muscle soreness by using a muscles soreness rating (MSR) scale. The 30 individuals were placed into three groups, one group using a placebo, one using deer antler extract, and the other deer antler powder. They performed a series of exercises, rating their muscle soreness 24 hours post-exercise. Across the groups there was a definite pattern of increased muscles soreness 24 hours after exercises were completed.

Where the powder group broke away from the other two groups, was the amount of time it took to return to a normal level. The deer antler powder individuals showed full recovery from muscle soreness 24 hours earlier than individuals using deer velvet extract and placebos, indicating faster relief from pain caused by tired muscles.

Deer antler velvet helps with increased speed

The need for speed in any athletic competition is a priority of athletes. Strong evidence supports increased speed with deer antler velvet. A study conducted tested the effects of deer antler velvet in athletes running. 50 men aged between 18 and 23 years old completed a timed run of 3,000 meters. The initial time was recorded. In a second run, deer antler velvet was given 30 minutes before the men ran the same distance again. The average time it took to run the distance significantly decreased to complete the run after having taken deer antler velvet.

In a second version of the experiment, deer antler velvet was researched for a period of 12 days. The runs were after a 24-hour period after taken the deer antler velvet. The time to complete the runs was reduced in the majority of runners. Advancement and improvement was seen in both above-average as well as below-average athletes.
