This is the Chandlers’ first venture in Broadway producing.
TYSON CHANDLER is an NBA Champion, All-Star, Defensive Player of the Year, Olympic Gold Medalist, and starting center for the New York Knicks. Prior to joining the Knicks, Tyson played for the Chicago Bulls, the New Orleans Hornets, and the Dallas Mavericks.
His wife, KIMBERLY CHANDLER, is a committed philanthropist and founder of “Rebound for Rockaway,” which benefits the families and community affected by Superstorm Sandy. Ms. Chandler is also an active supporter of UNICEF and Delete Blood Cancer (DKMS). Tyson and Kimberly met while in high school and are proud parents to Sacha-Marie, Tyson II, and Sayge Jozelle.
“Kimberly and I are very excited to join the producing team behind this landmark production of the American classic, THE TRIP TO BOUNTIFUL,” said Tyson Chandler.
“Tyson and I were extremely moved by the play and its message of honoring one’s history, heritage, and home. And to have Mr. Foote’s work brought to life by these exceptional actors - Cuba Gooding Jr., Vanessa Williams, and the legendary Cicely Tyson – is something everyone should experience,” said Kimberly Chandler.
THE TRIP TO BOUNTIFUL stars Academy Award nominee and Emmy Award-winner Cicely Tyson, who is returning to Broadway after 30 years, Academy Award winner Cuba Gooding Jr., Emmy Award nominee and recording star Vanessa Williams, and Tony Award nominee Condola Rashad.
THE TRIP TO BOUNTIFUL has been nominated for four Outer Critics Circle Awards, including Outstanding Revival of a Play, Outstanding Actress in a Play (Cicely Tyson), Outstanding Featured Actress in a Play (Vanessa Williams), and Outstanding Director of a Play (Michael Wilson).
The inspiring American classic, THE TRIP TO BOUNTIFUL, tells the story of Carrie Watts (Cicely Tyson), who is trapped in a cramped Houston apartment with her soft-spoken son (Cuba Gooding Jr) and out-spoken daughter-in-law (Vanessa Williams), dreaming of a return to her home in the small Gulf Coast town of Bountiful, where she grew up and raised her family. Fearing that she’s an imposition and chafing under her daughter-in-law’s watchful eye, she steals away with her latest pension check and heads home in the journey of a lifetime. The result is an unforgettable play about the idea of home and its power to sustain us.
THE TRIP TO BOUNTIFUL premiered as a teleplay on NBC in 1953. The play was adapted by Mr. Foote into an acclaimed 1985 film starring Geraldine Page, for which she won the Academy Award. In 2005, Signature Theatre produced the play Off-Broadway starring Lois Smith, for which she won Lortel, Obie, Outer Critics and Drama Desk Awards.
